The 27th annual Fur Ball Gala was held on Aug. 17 at the Gaines St. Campus of San Diego Humane Society. The Fur Ball netted $330,000 to support the animals of our community and the programs and services provided by the San Diego Humane Society. Sponsors included The Petco Foundation, VCA Animal Hospitals, EDCO, Phil’s BBQ, Cynergy, Underground Elephant, Dowling & Yaknke and Wells Fargo. The evening honored Paul E. Jolly, Founder and Executive Director of the Petco Foundation for his unwavering support animals, not just in our own backyard, but around the world.

The 9th Annual Chef Showdown 2013 honoring National Domestic Violence Awareness Month is being held on Sept. 26 at the NTC Promenade. The proceeds will benefit the programs and services provided by the Center for Community Solutions. 10 of San Diego’s top chefs will come together for an entertaining Iron Chef-inspired culinary competition. Center for Community Solutions assists more than 30,000 women, men and children affected by sexual assault, domestic violence and elder abuse each year.

The UC San Diego Luau and Longboard Invitational was held on Aug. 18 with 550 people in attendance. The Allergan Foundation team won the surf competition out of 90 surfers and 18 surf legends participated in the completion. Steve Walden and Al Merrick collaborated on a unique surfboard project for the 20th anniversary of the Luau and Longboard Invitational. The boards sold together during the live auction for $11,000. For the sixth year, Pfizer, Inc. was the title sponsor. The $235,000 raised will support cancer research at UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center.

36 matches from Big Brothers, Big Sisters attended Royal India’s Rhaki Event, celebrating the bond between siblings. Guests were treated to dinner, the traditional Rhaki bracelet exchange from the Big to the Little. Royal India Restaurant donated 20% of proceeds during the week of Rhaki for guests who made a reservation mentioning Rhaki.

The 24th Annual Make-A-Wish Tuna Challenge held on Aug. 24-25 raised $180,000 to be used to grant wishes for local children with life-threatening medical conditions. The Jobsite Supply Company was the presenting sponsor of the tournament. “The real catch of the day was the support for our Wish Kids,” says Tuna Challenge Committee Member Malaine Hall-Plymesser.

Urban Campout : Sparkles and Spurs is being held on Sept. 6 at Girl Scouts San Diego “s Balboa Park Campus. Trick roper Loop Rawlins will be a special guest, returning to San Diego after his recent Summer Pops appearance with Cirque Musical and the San Diego Symphony.

Urban Campout Committee Daughters

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s San Diego-based Pacific South Coast Chapter is presenting its 2013 Southern California Challenge Walk MS on Sept. 27-29. The three day 50-mile walk begins at Carlsbad’s Flower Fields and ends in Downtown San Diego. Each of the 220 walkers commits to raising a minimum donation of $2,500. All proceeds go towards MS research and programs and services for Southern Californians living with MS.

San Diego Jobs PAC is hosting its 1st Bocce Ball Tournament on Sept. 18 at Stone Brewing World Bistro in Liberty Station.

Bice San Diego hosted a Mexitalian culinary showdown between Chef Mario, Italian Executive Chef and Chef Poncho of La Esquina Restaurante in Tijuana on Aug. 23. Bice presented the San Diego Police Foundation with a $1,000 check from the proceeds of the evening. The donation will help to fund equipment, training and programs for San Diego Police.
