The San Diego Downtown Breakfast Rotary Club presented the 2015 Peacemaker Award to Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman at its meeting on Feb. 18 at the University Club. The Award is presented annually in February in honor of World Understanding Month designated by Rotary International. Zimmerman, who became San Diego Police Chief in March of 2015, is recognized for her commitment and peacekeeping approach to provide transparency between the Police Department and the community of San Diego.
The 2nd Annual Big Barona Bash is set for Mar. 7 at Barona Resort & Casino to benefit Seany’s Camp Reach for the Sky. The camp is a project of The Seany Foundation, for children dealing with cancer.
A group of churches in the East County contributed dollars to purchase 45 life-saving trauma kits for the El Cajon Police Department. The trauma kits contain critical medical supplies intended to stop bleeding and dress a wound prior to arrival by paramedics or other medical personnel. The new kits will be placed inside the El Cajon police vehicles.
The San Diego Police Foundation Women Blue is being held on Mar. 25 at the La Jolla Marriott. Verizon is the Presenting Sponsor and the Keeping Our Kids Safe Online Champions are eset and Cox. Patti Roscoe is the Honorary Chair of the luncheon which raises funds to support the Foundation. Three women from San Diego Police Department will be honored.
The Little Italy Association, USO San Diego and Wounded Warrior Battalion West joined forces to host a lunch reception for 140 international Wounded Warriors from 14 allied countries on Mar.2 on top of Nelson Photography. As part of the American Experience for the Wounded Warriors, the reception kicks off the 2015 Marine Corps Trails. Restaurant owners, business owners and community members provided support for the reception. “USO San Diego is grateful to the Little Italy Association for, once again, providing this special opportunity to our Allied Nation wounded, ill and injured athletes,” said Judy Forrester, President and CEO of USO.

The 37th Annual Women’s Auxiliary Gala “Emerald City” was held on Feb. 21 at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla. The Seacrest Village Retirement Communities event chaired by Rusti Bartell raised $425,000 to be used for the provision of charitable care for those residents who have exhausted their financial resources. New medical surgical beds for the skilled nursing and rehabilitation center will also be purchased from the proceeds. Auction items included a Baby Taylor acoustic guitar signed by James Taylor paired with four tickets to see Steely Dan in concert at Humphreys Concerts by the Bay.

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation San Diego Chapter is teaming up with The Commons in the Gaslamp Quarter for the 7th annual, nationwide Shave-A-Thon. On Mar. 7 San Diegans will shave their heads to generate awareness, fund research for childhood cancer, and to help survivors live long and healthy lives. “The goal is to raise $50,000 at this year’s event,” said Jake Pescatello, founder of the San Diego chapter. All proceeds will go directly to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation San Diego.
Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa is hosting A Celebration of Will, A Challenged Athletes Foundation Gala on Mar. 7 to honor the legacy of Robin Williams. The event is being co-chaired by Jeff Jacobs and Jeffrey Essakow, co-owners of Rancho Valencia. Williams is being recognized for his long-time support of the Challenged Athletes Foundation. Each dollar raised is being matched by a donor and placed in the Challenged Athletes Foundation Endowment in memory of Robin Williams.
