Located right off the I-8 in the midst of Mission Valley’s bustling retail district, Riverwalk Golf Club is a quiet respite. In fact, the signature hole, number three on the Mission course, can be seen in clear view from the freeway and teases you with its magnificent putting green surrounded by vibrant flowers, foliage, and running water that feeds into a crystal lake. Palm, oak, and eucalyptus trees line the fairways, and you quickly forget that you are in the heart of the city. If ever a golf course actually “called to you,” this would be the one.
With four lakes, various wetlands, nearly 100 bunkers, and the San Diego River carving its way through the landscape, the course sets a challenge for advanced players, while the variety of tee boxes offer an enjoyable round for golfers with less experience.
There are three nine-hole courses, each providing a different feel yet remaining consistent in quality. The Mission course features dogleg holes and an impressive suspension bridge over the San Diego River.
The Friars course is on the north side of the trolley tracks and runs along Friars Road. And on the Presidio course, the longest of the three, your tee shot on the first hole is directly into the wind—no easy feat.
Happy hour at Riverwalk’s clubhouse includes specialty drinks, eight craft beers on tap, and a fun atmosphere to take in the view of the course at sunset. On Wednesdays, the club also hosts trivia nights with bites, beer, and brainteasers. Looks like your swing isn’t the only thing that will get a workout!
