San Diego Happy Half Hour Podcast: Episode 30

Trust to open a new cocktail concept in Hillcrest, why you should take photos of your food, and Bird Rock Coffee Roasters' Chuck Patton stops by

By Archana Ram

In today’s episode of Happy Half Hour, hosts Erin Chambers Smith and Troy Johnson along with producer Archana Ram are coming to you from the Ronald McDonald House Charities’ Dream House in Bird Rock. The multi-million dollar oceanfront home—as well as a Tesla, vacations, and more—is up for grabs in the charity group’s 13th annual raffle. That means a $150 raffle ticket could win you oceanfront property in Bird Rock. (The early bird ticket deadline is February 10.)

In today’s food and drink news, we chat about a new cocktail concept set to land on Park Boulevard, just a few blocks from Trust restaurant in Hillcrest and from the same team. And Pappalecco has opened a fifth location, this time in the Del Mar Highlands Town Center. Expect pastries, coffee, gelato, salads, pizza, and more.

Then Chuck Patton, the founder of award-winning local roaster Bird Rock Coffee Roasters joins us to talk about how he went from a teacher to coffee pro, the international trips he’s made in search of the best beans, and his go-to order at his shop. He also chimes in about the day’s hot topic: why photographing your food has been proven to make it taste better.

We also talk Small Bites, including where to get a great meal for two for under $50, like Saigon on 5th, Flying Pig Pub & Kitchen, and Nine-Ten’s wallet-friendly happy hour.
