The all-thread works currently on display at the Scott White Contemporary Art in La Jolla. Dubbed String Theory

By Christine Pasalo

Not all portraits are painted or photographed. Case in (needle)point: The all-thread works currently on display at the Scott White Contemporary Art in La Jolla. Dubbed String Theory, the exhibition features pieces by Devorah Sperber, Kumi Yamashita, and Cayce Zavaglia, each of whom weaved, embroidered, or assembled photorealistic images using strands of fabric rather than acrylics or a camera. Included in the showcase is the above installation by Sperber, in which hundreds of thread spools are hung together so that when seen through a “viewing sphere,” the spools become pixels in a miniature rendering of van Gogh’s self-portrait. Showing until June 1
