They’ve covered songs by George Gershwin and Maroon 5, and soon local vocal music group SACRA/PROFANA will be on stage in a new musical at the La Jolla Playhouse. It’s a natural fit, says SACRA’s artistic director and founder, Krishan Oberoi. “We’re able to perform pop music and very high classical music with the same respect, professionalism, and quality. We’re also very interested in doing things which haven’t been done before.” (Watch their latest music video on YouTube, “Land of Confusion,” which “juxtaposes classical tradition and pop art.”) SACRA/PROFANA, whose name is Latin for “sacred/profane,” will fill the role of Greek chorus and orchestra for the show based on the Disney movie inspired by Victor Hugo’s novel. One hundred and twenty choristers will split into teams of 32 to perform eight shows a week.

Opening October 26, The Hunchback of Notre Dame is the product of a creative team with multiple Oscars, Grammys, and Tonys between them. Alan Menken gave us the scores for The Little Mermaid, Little Shop of Horrors, and Beauty and the Beast. The production is directed by Scott Schwartz, son of the show’s lyricist, Stephen Schwartz (Godspell, Pippin, Wicked).

Call them musical theater’s A-team—star-studded talent on a San Diego stage. Oberoi himself is a New Yorker and Yale School of Music grad.
