Emma got a Beverly Hills makeover in Clueless, while Bridget Jones’s Diary and Curtis Sittenfeld’s latest, Eligible, offer modern retellings of Pride and Prejudice. For those craving something classic—with a twist—this month The Old Globe premieres a musical rendition of Sense and Sensibility, Austen’s 1811 debut novel about two sisters coping with the loss of their family fortune.
The production comes with celebrated stage cred, including music by The Book of Mormon’s Larry Hochman and a partnership with the Chicago Shakespeare Theater. The Bard and Austen? Everything old really is new again.
