This month, the San Diego Opera will be singing—and swinging—with a 1920s take on Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata at the Civic Theatre. Based on a play by the son of The Three Musketeers author Alexandre Dumas, the story remains much the same—a courtesan named Violetta veers from her party-girl ways when she falls in love with a new man—but the setting takes on a flapper-era sensibility.
The show is filled with boldface names, including seasoned soprano Corinne Winters, who’s also played Violetta for the Seattle Opera and London’s Royal Opera House, and is directed by Marta Domingo, wife of Spanish opera icon Plácido Domingo. It’ll be a roaring good time.
