In her first major solo exhibit, New York-based abstractionist Nancy Lorenz is drenching the San Diego Museum of Art in platinum, silver, and gold. Comprising more than 85 masterpieces, Moon Gold fancies up informal media like folding screens, cardboard, and boxes with materials like mother-of-pearl inlay, gold leaf, and lacquer.
Some of the most fascinating work builds on Lorenz’s training in Japanese decorative art by taking inspiration from the Japanese works in SDMA’s permanent collection. Then there are her “pours,” contemporary pieces that use the plaster-like substance gesso as a base for gilding. The result? Good as gold.
