April 27 is National Independent Bookstore Day, but locals are celebrating all weekend long during the fifth annual San Diego Book Crawl, April 27–29.
Organized by Scott Ehrig-Burgess, manager of the Library Shop (a nonprofit for all city libraries), the crawl features nine indie bookstores. Crawlers pick up a passport at any of them and earn a stamp with every purchase. That enters you to win raffle prizes. Visit five stores to earn a tote bag designed by local artist, author, and illustrator Susie Ghahremani; seven stores gets you a “top secret” enamel pin also designed by Ghahremani.
Mysterious Galaxy, Warwick’s, La Playa Books, Run for Cover, Verbatim Books, and UC San Diego Bookstore are all participating. So is South Park’s Book Catapult, the favorite of Caitlin Rother, author of true crime books like Hunting Charles Manson and Naked Addiction. “I just love this place,” she says. “The owners are doing such a great job making life fun for writers and book aficionados.” Take a page from Rother’s book and crawl to an indie near you.
