Palm Springs’ La Quinta Resort Turns 90

By Kimberly Cunningham

Well before Coachella brought hipsters to the desert, and the midcentury modern revival made the valley en vogue, there was La Quinta. The resort, now part of the Waldorf Astoria family, has long been a refuge for Hollywood elite, dating back to 1930s screen legends like Greta Garbo and Clark Gable.

This year, the grand dame of Palm Springs turns 90, with a fresh $22-million upgrade to boot. Despite its whopping 620 rooms, 98 Spanish villas, and 41 pools, the property still feels secluded and quiet, and remains the verdant desert oasis it’s always been. Stay cool with the resort’s new Chilled program, including pushcart cocktails and pool temps set at 84 degrees. Ready, set, summer.
