UC San Diego’s Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography received a $6 million gift from Price Philanthropies, a private family foundation of Robert and Allison Price. “One of the real shortcomings for children in communities like City Heights and other areas is the lack of opportunity to have exposure to cultural institutions as well as museums and science resources,” said Robert Price. Their gift will establish the Price Philanthropies Ocean Science Education Fund, an education outreach program in ocean and earth science. “Our primary interest in our philanthropy is supporting families, and particularly youth, in disadvantaged or challenged communities,” Price said.

The day was spent with employees installing roofing, hanging drywall and painting. “I have always been an advocate of giving back, and it is even better when we can do it together. St. Paul Senior Services received a legacy gift from former San Diego philanthropist Phil Klauber. Klauber personally impacted St. Paul’s for over 30 years. His philanthropy touched many of the programs of St. Paul’s, including the Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) and St. Paul’s Villa. A $200,000 estate donation through the San Diego Foundation was made to St. Paul’s. “Phil’s service to our mission spurred our growth to become a prominent leader in senior care,” said St. Paul’s CEO, Cheryl Wilson.
San Diego Volunteer Lawyer Program’s 26th Annual Women’s Resource Fair was held on Feb. 28. Volunteers, medical and social service organizations provided free services to women and children in need. Free childcare and transportation was provided to select locations. Attendees received gift bags with toiletries, and children received a gift bag with stuffed animals, books, a blanket and pillow, all donated by individuals and businesses in San Diego.
Just in Time for Foster Youth Annual Gala, Walk the Talk is being held on Mar. 14 at the Prado in Balboa Park. US Bank is the title sponsor for the event. This year’s event will honor the Livingston family whose focus is on supporting promising foster youth. They have supported JIT since its inception. Proceeds will benefit Just in Time for Foster Youth.
The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary hosted a reunion brunch for past and present Women of Dedication/Elegance on Feb. 26 at the Kroc Center. Beginning in 1965 as a fundraiser for The Salvation Army, this the 50th anniversary, is expected to surpass the past year’s events. The event’s theme, “50 & Fabulous , will be held on Apr. 7 at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel.

The 2015 Go Red For Women Luncheon was held on Feb. 27 at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel. Five Legendary Women Of The Heart were honored. The American Heart Association’s Go Red For Wome is the national campaign to increase awareness of heart disease-the leading cause of death in women. Local sponsors include SDGE, Charles Schwabb, Scripps, Datron, Swinerton Builders and Sycuan Casino. Proceeds go towards reach for heart disease and educational programs.
