Tell us about your character on Animal Kingdom.
I play Pope Cody. Pope is the oldest of the four Cody brothers. The narrative begins when his twin sister, Julia, overdoses and her son, J, is forced to move in with the notorious Cody family. Pope is a dangerous and unpredictable character. When he’s introduced, he’s just been released from prison for robbing a bank.
What are some of the places where the show has filmed that locals might recognize?
To me, Animal Kingdom’s signature shot is when J rides his bike on the pier—the tall palm trees blowing in the ocean breeze as he rolls along the faded wooden beams. It photographs so beautifully. Also the Strand near the pier, San Onofre State Beach, and Real Surf Shop. Oceanside plays such a big role in the show. It is a character in and of itself. The way of life. The attitude of the locals. The surf.
Have you been to the Flying Pig in Oceanside?
We filmed in the Flying Pig! I remember a boar’s head or something on the wall? It was a bit of a blur.

Have you done anything fun during your time off?
We took our son Leo to Legoland.
Have you had a fish taco yet?
Yes, they are quite spectacular. My wife ate at Hello Betty and liked the fish tacos. But I’m from Ijamsville, Maryland, and nothing compares to a good Maryland crab cake.
Do you have any hidden talents that might surprise people?
I am a damn fine juggler and a deadly tennis player.
Animal Kingdom premieres June 7 on TNT.
