The scents that each fragrance carries represent a different style and personality of a man
Sponsored Content Provided by Machines Agency
With the ever-growing selection of colognes and men’s fragrances, finding the right one that will suit you the most is quite the undertaking. The scents that each fragrance carries represent a different style and personality of a man.
To understand how to pick the best cologne, we went on a mission to investigate how fragrances are developed, classified, and broken down. We wanted to know exactly how the experts classify the different scents and what lingo they use to assess the quality and appeal of all the different scents.
Scents are categorized in three different classifications – citrus, green and spicy. Citrus scents are the clean, fresh notes you pick up on. It is typically tart and acidic, like a lemon or grapefruit. Green scents are also clean but sweet and sometimes earthy. An example of this is mint or lavender. Spicy scents are what bring the muskiness out of a fragrance. They are usually what gives a cologne its character and lasting impression. Sandalwood, leather, and cinnamon are examples of spicy scents.
Now that we understand the breakdown of fragrances, we would like to recommend the absolute best colognes for black men in 2023.

The philosophy of Blu Atlas is to produce premium quality products, using ingredients that are proven by science to work. They take this scientific approach in their skincare products and their signature cologne, Atlantis.

Dior.jpg
One of the finest colognes to try in 2023 is this newer, more modern launch of Sauvage Elixir from Christian Dior. We all know about Christian Dior as a high-end luxury brand. It is no secret that this designer never fails to produce only top-notch, quality products. Their perfumes and colognes can also be said, especially this Sauvage Elixir.
It is said that this fragrance is as rare as the appearance of the red moon. This fragrance mixes fresh and tart tones of mandarin and bergamot grown in Italy’s Dior gardens. Then Dior went on a journey to Sri Lanka to select the most delicate scents of cedar and sandalwood. These fragrances provide a musky and fresh aroma that has a hint of vanilla from Papua New Guinea.
This fragrance will instantly give you an air of luxury, sensuality, and sophistication. It is perfect for any special occasion, such as proposing marriage, fancy dinner outings, and even formal work events. With this fragrance accompanying you, you will be ready to take on whatever task with boldness and courage to succeed. This is the best cologne for black men in 2023; we highly recommend adding it to your rotation of colognes.
Montblanc.jpg
For the active, charismatic man who is frequently on the go or in regular social outings, business meetings, and other events where he expends his energy, Montblanc Legend is the perfect cologne to complement his lifestyle.
This French cologne is skillfully and artfully composed with green and spicy scents that provide a fresh yet masculine fragrance. It will electrify your presence while emphasizing your energetic spirit. The white cedarwood brings out just the right tones to say that the man wearing this cologne is full of spunk and energy that infects everyone. The bergamot tones finish off the scent nicely and speak volumes of the charismatic masculinity of the man wearing Montblanc Legend.
Montblanc has been around since 1906, and the quality and reputation of this designer have been stellar. The craftsmanship and quality of their products reflect the thought, heart, and soul they put into creating new and innovative products and designs. They have and continue to uphold sustainable business practices in terms of responsibly sourcing materials and human capital to complete their vision. We are very proud to recommend a product from this designer, but especially this cologne, the Montblanc Legend.
Nautica.jpg
In contrast to the high-end, luxury colognes we’ve recommended up until this point, this Nautica Voyage has a less hefty price tag but equally pleasing scents.
The sweet-smelling aroma of fruits like pineapple and peach pair beautifully with the fresh tones of bergamot. It is further complemented by sandalwood, cedar, and musk.
This fragrance carries the right tones to take you on a sunny summer voyage. It reminds us of a tropical cruise and pina colada’s by the pool. This is just what you need for a relaxed and cheerful vibe for everyday summer activities and outings.
Many users have raved about the beautiful, refreshing fragrance. It isn’t too overpowering, but many claims that it lasts a long time throughout the day. For a reasonable price, it delivers the promised fragrance, eliminates unflattering odor, and helps you stay fresh, confident, and attractive throughout the day.
Polo.jpg
Ralph Lauren’s Polo Black is another classic fragrance that deserves the spotlight in 2023. Though it is a classic, it stands the test of time and continues to intrigue and draws many people’s attention.
The fragrance is bold but aromatic. It is infused with the fruity touch of mango, lemon, and tangerine and gives off a fresh and tart aroma. When paired with warm hints of sandalwood and the slight spiciness of sage, it presents a uniquely bold and bittersweet aroma.
These citrusy and earthy scents make for the perfect cologne for work and other casual occasions. Many satisfied customers state that this fragrance sees them through an entire day’s worth of activities without the need to reapply it midday.
Versace.jpg
For the strong, passionate men, we would like to bring Eros by Versace as one of the best colognes for black men in 2023. This fragrance comes with key notes of mint leaves, orange blossoms, and vanilla. It represents a highly admired and esteemed man for his peaceful, measured and cheerful demeanor.
This fragrance also carries lemon zest and green apple hints for the added fresh and vibrant aroma. It is perfectly named and representative of Eros, the God of Love. If you want to exude passion, love, and maturity, this cologne is specifically made for a man like you.
Like all the others from this Italian designer, this fragrance never disappoints even the pickiest of men. Every component of this cologne is specially selected to bring the perfect aroma of fresh, sweet and spicy scents.
The packaging is as beautiful and luxurious as the fragrance itself. It is encased in a translucent, turquoise glass that is engraved with a rectangular pattern and Versace’s logo. The bottle is enclosed with a smooth blue cap that is adorned with gold detailing. The designer name is also placed with gold lettering on the front of the bottle.
Best of all, they take extra measures to ensure that their business practices are exemplary for environmental and sustainable design and development.
Chanel.jpg
If you are on the path to build a legacy for yourself, perhaps this cologne from Chanel is the perfect fragrance to take along on your mission. It has a woody aromatic fragrance that is a result of top notes like mint, lemon, pink pepper and grapefruit. It is then deepened by ginger, nutmeg and amber. This scent is manly, sophisticated and exemplary of a successful, put-together man who is in charge of his own destiny. It is perfect for those who dare to defy social norms and step out of their comfort zones.
The presentation and design of the cologne bottle is as sleek and sophisticated as the fragrance itself. Encased in a thick, sleek glass bottle that is a deep shade of navy blue, this bottle is a beautiful statement piece for your vanity.
This cologne is beautiful, sexy, and boundary-defying fragrance in gorgeous packaging. It is from one of the most prestigious designers of the world and it is an easy pick for list of the best colognes for black men in 2023.
Dolce & Gabbana.jpg
If you’re a man who loves a traditional style but can also appreciate a modern touch, K by Dolce & Gabbana represents this combined approach perfectly.
This fragrance has the perfect combination of earthy and woody scents. It is complemented by citrus scents that come from blood orange and the lemons from Sicily. They are then married with woody scents of cedar. This fragrance is masculine, fresh and seductive. It is perfect for the charismatic spirit of tradition mixed with a tad a rebellion.
The cologne bottle represents tradition and modernism as well. This sexy cologne is enclosed in a traditional, rectangular bottle with modern, crisp edges. But it is topped with a traditional crown. Anyone in possession of this cologne is instantly crowned as the royal king of the castle, with a modern twist.
Prada.png
For those who tend to gravitate towards fresh, aquatic scents Luna Rossa Ocean by Prada will be the perfect choice to try in 2023. Prada is probably one of the most luxurious high-end designers, rivaling many others with its iconic designs. It is instantly recognizable by most people and attributed to wealth, success and sophistication.
Luna Rossa Ocean is not any different in projecting that message of esteemed status and class. It carries the fresh citrusy scent of bergamot and green scents combined with Iris and beriberi essence. This fragrance is meant to carry you to the shore of the sea to breathe in the fresh, crisp ocean breeze. It will provide that vibe of masculinity mixed with a freshness that will lure you in and make you an instant pillar of attraction, sensuality, and mature sophistication.
The bottle that carries this majestic fragrance has a beautifully designed presentation as well. It is rectangular shaped, with an ombré blue that gradually deepens at the bottom of the bottle. It represents the deep blue of the ocean, both with scent and design.
Yves Saint Laurent.png
Yves Saint Laurent (YSL) is French luxury fashion designer and is a well known label around the world. This designer takes pride in producing unique, stylish and high fashion designs that are iconic, on the runway and in personal use. The same can be said of their colognes and perfumes, specifically L’Homme Cologne Bleue.
If a man is attempting to present himself as someone who is inviting, energetic and sophisticated then this L’Homme Cologne Bleue by Yves Saint Laurent is the perfect option. It is a fresh acquatic smell of the ocean, with hints of citrus and just a touch of black pepper and cardamom.
Think of the last time you visit a beach in the evening hours. The warm, summer breeze gently tosses your hair with that fresh scent of the sea. As you breath in the smell of the sea, you are invigorated, relaxed and lured in to smell it some more. Many customers claim that this is the perfect cologne for going on dates as its not overwhelming, but has just enough appeal to attract your date.
This fragrance by YSL is the closest to this wondorous sea breeze in a bottle, and better. The acquatic marine scent is distinct and is complemented by citrusy bergamot. It has the perfect amount of muskiness with the fine tones of cardamom and cedarwood. It is masculine, fresh and sexy.
Malin+Goetz.png
In the recent years cannabis products have become a huge presence in almost every market imagineable, and bcause of this, we cannot go without mentioning a cannabis infused with cannabis. Malin+Goetz put out and amazing Cannabis eau de parfum and there is a lot to love about this fragrance.
This fragrance has the perfect balance of woody, floral and citrus tones. It is musky enough for a man to wear and appear masculine, sophisticated and put together. It has just enough floral and citrus tones for a woman to wear this parfum as well and still appear feminine, fierce and bold in her abilities to break down a glass ceiling. We love that this is a gender neutral option that everyone can enjoy.
This scent is earthy and sunny. You will be reminded of those perfectly sunny, post-brunch Sunday afternoons that warrant a good nap on the porch swing. All ingredients that go into producing this fragrance are sourced from local gardens. The packaging is sustainable and made with eco-friendly materials, for a minimal carbon footprint.
Cannabis in perfumes and colognes is beneficial as it is a form of aromatherapy. It isn’t strong enough to make you feel buzzed but it does have a calming, de-stressing effect that won’t interfere with your busy day of work. For fresh, citrusy smell with tones of black pepper, cedar and huskiness, we highly recommend checking out Milan+Goetz for their Cannabis eau de parfum.
When you’re out shopping for a new perfume or cologne, it is common to run into tongue-twisting terms that are either foreign or just uncommon in daily use. We wanted to define these terms to help your shopping go smoother.
Fragrance that comes in dark or black colored glass bottles. It isn’t the same as perfume because it contains a higher level of alcohol concentration. It is marketed more towards men who gravitate more towards the masculine appearance of the bottle’s presentation and musky smell. As we’ve gathered from our review of the best colognes for black men in 2023, cologne fragrances come smelling in a variety of different tones and scents.
Eau de toillette is a fancy term that indicates the specific fragrance has a smaller concentration of essential oils than eau de parfum. This means it will not last as long and will likely need to be reapplied after 3 to 5 hours.
Eau de parfum is typically a feminine fragrance that uses a higher concentration of essential oils. Unlike eau de toilette, it will last an entire day and one bottle will go a long way. Though parfum is typically targeted towards female fragrances, it is still common enough with colognes and men’s fragrances too. For example, the first fragrance we reviewed is Atlantis by Blu Atlas and it is an eau de parfum.
Parfum is typically in the women’s section and has the highest concentration of oils to alchohol. This type of fragrance will linger for awhile and will remain on your clothes until you throw them in the wash. The higher conentration of oil indicates a long lasting scent.
This a French term indicating that the fragrance is made specifically for men.
This is also another French term meaning “concept or image of a man”. This term on cologne bottles is meant to convey the message that this cologne is the perfect representation of masculinity.
When a fragrance is described to have “oriental notes” that means it is warm, rich and will have scents of amber and wood.
Scents that would remind you of soil or the earth. An example of this is vetiver or patchouli, which were included in many of the fragrances we reviewed.
Just like many fragrance descriptions, we used “notes” frequently in our review today. This is simply the ingredient used to produce the particular smell. Notes are typically layered in a bottle of cologne or perfume in top, middle and base notes. The top notes is the first scent you will smell and the middle notes are what you will continue smelling as the fragrance wears off. The scent that lingers will be the base notes.

The San Diego home remodeling company works on full homes, kitchens, bathrooms, home additions, ADUs, garages, landscapes, and hardscapes.
Most homeowners want two things before they commit to a remodel: a realistic sense of cost and a clear picture of what the finished space will look like. Milan Design + Build helps deliver both through its online remodeling estimator and personalized design consultations, supported by a showroom experience and 3D renderings.
“The online estimate gives homeowners a starting number in about a minute, and the showroom and 3D renderings let them see materials and layouts before anything is built,” says David Noriani, CEO of Milan Design + Build. “Keeping design, permits, and construction with one team helps us manage expectations and keep everyone working toward the same vision.”

Modern design is a particular focus for Milan, with an emphasis on clean lines, natural light, functional layouts, and carefully selected materials. The team adapts each design to the homeowner’s lifestyle and the character of the property. Milan Design + Build combines thoughtful design with construction expertise, creating spaces that are as functional as they are beautiful.
The online estimator covers kitchen remodels, bathroom renovations, full-home remodels, and ADU construction. At Milan’s showroom on Carroll Road, visitors can review real materials, finishes, and design options, meet the design-build team, and discuss project scope, budget, and timing. Consultations can also be held virtually for homeowners who prefer to start remotely.
At Milan Design + Build, one integrated team works on the entire project. Design and construction aren’t divided between separate firms. The process begins with a consultation and feasibility review, followed by design, space planning, and 3D renderings developed from detailed measurements and digital scans. The team also coordinates architectural plans, structural engineering, city approvals, and material selection, with construction overseen by a dedicated project manager.
Homeowners can explore their remodeling options, get an initial estimate, or request a design consultation at MilanBuild.com.

From century-old Craftsman homes to vegan fantasy bars, dive bars, and a tiki room built for exactly two people, this is one of San Diego’s great little neighborhoods
You may not realize it, but Balboa Park is bigger than Central Park (in fact, 1.5 times larger). Pressed right up against its southeastern edge is a little architecture farm built on old trolley bones, where houses look like someone was collecting architectural styles and local businesses are still run by people who seem personally invested in keeping this place interesting.
This is South Park.
To understand why it feels the way it does today—less like one commercial strip and more like a handful of tiny villages—you have to go back to the trolley.
The land that became the original South Park Addition (the subdivision’s original name) was surveyed in 1870 and officially filed in 1890, but the neighborhood really started becoming a neighborhood in the early 1900s. The Bartlett Estate Company began developing and marketing the tract in earnest around 1906, pairing lots and new homes with something extremely useful if you lived outside Downtown in the horse-and-buggy era: an electric streetcar.
On May 1, 1906, the South Park and East Side Railway made its first trip. Developers didn’t just build near transportation; they helped pay for the transportation, then used it to sell the dream. Downtown had industry, noise, and congestion. Out here were palms, sidewalks, utilities, room to breathe and a four-cent ride back to the city.
It worked. Homes began filling in around the streetcar route, and little commercial clusters grew around the places where people got on and off. That transportation pattern is still written into South Park’s geography. Some of the neighborhood’s odd street geometry is also due in part to the trolley—the old line cut across parcels instead of politely obeying the grid, leaving behind pieces of land that later businesses learned to build around. Places like Station Tavern sit on the former easement and station site of San Diego’s No. 2 trolley line.
Then San Diego went big for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition in neighboring Balboa Park. The exposition transformed much of the park and helped push the city through another burst of building and growth. South Park was right there to absorb some of that momentum.
And the people building houses here had taste.
Walk the residential streets now and it can feel like somebody planted an architectural sample garden: Craftsman, Prairie, Mission Revival, Tudor Revival, Spanish Colonial Revival. Creedence Clearwater Revival. All the revivals. The neighborhood includes work by Irving Gill, one of the defining architects of early modern California; Gill-designed Prairie homes still stand along Granada Avenue.
The city formally designated the South Park Historic District in 2017, recognizing roughly 400 properties and a period of significance stretching from 1906 through 1949. In other words, a lot of what makes the place feel old is actually old.
While the trolley eventually disappeared, the basic idea behind it didn’t. South Park is still a neighborhood organized around little pockets of human activity: a couple blocks where you can buy a record, drink a beer, find a 60-year-old lamp, eat a vegan burger beneath gothic beasts, browse a bookstore, and walk home past a century-old Craftsman.
The 30th-and-Fern area may be the clearest example. Several surviving buildings there date to South Park’s early development, including the old Fire Station No. 9, Rose Grocery building, and Burlingame Garage. What began as infrastructure for a young streetcar suburb became the neighborhood’s commercial heart.
That history is also partly why buying a house here can be competitive. There isn’t some endless supply of vacant land waiting around the corner for another subdivision. Much of the neighborhood filled in generations ago, and the architecture itself is part of the appeal.
San Diego Mag’s been documenting the city for 78 years. And we’ve been looking for a partner who loved the city enough to help us tell its stories. Redfin is that partner. They’re helping us tell the story of some of the city’s most unique neighborhoods. They launched Redfin Early Access this year to get their people in first and to see certain coming-soon and exclusive listings on Redfin before they appear on other major real-estate sites.
First up: South Park.
Here are some of the people and places worth knowing here:

Start with Judy “the Beauty” Forman, because it’s difficult to explain South Park without her. The former social worker bought Big Kitchen in 1980 and turned a neighborhood breakfast joint into a gathering place for artists, musicians, activists, politicians, eccentrics, and pretty much anyone who needed somewhere to belong. As Judy puts it, “I built this for people who others passed over.”
One of those people was a young single mom named Whoopi Goldberg, who worked as a dishwasher here before the Whoopi Goldberg part of her career happened. Today Big Kitchen still serves breakfast and lunch Thursday through Monday.
3003 Grape Street
Whistle Stop reopened in 2001, right as South Park’s little independent-business ecosystem was finding a new generation. Owner Sam Chammas—also connected to Live Wire and, later, Station Tavern—helped turn it into the kind of neighborhood bar where the calendar can jump from a DJ night to live bands to some strange communal event nobody at a normal sports bar would propose.
The room still has that laid-back, slightly sweaty house-party quality. Check what’s happening before you go, because Whistle Stop changes personality depending on the night: sometimes neighborhood beer, sometimes everyone dancing beneath the disco ball like work tomorrow was canceled.
2236 Fern Street
Station Tavern may be the most literal example of old South Park becoming new South Park. It opened in 2009 on land once crossed diagonally by the No. 2 trolley line, and architect Lloyd Russell incorporated that history into the design rather than pretending the weirdly shaped lot wasn’t weirdly shaped. The project won the San Diego Architectural Foundation’s Grand Orchid Award the same year it opened.
Sam Chammas built the place as an open-air burger-and-beer spot with big communal tables, a backyard, room for kids, and room for dogs. It still works exactly that way: get a burger, get the tots, let everybody spread out, stay awhile.
2204 Fern Street
Kindred arrived in late 2015 looking nothing like the beige-and-leafy vegan restaurant stereotype. The place went full gothic fever dream—heavy music, wild cocktails, decadent plant-based food—and eventually collected national vegan accolades plus local Restaurant of the Year and design honors.
And in 2026, it got even weirder. Hidden behind a chain-mail passage inside Kindred is Throne Room, a medieval-fantasy cocktail chamber whose mythology grew out of a Dungeons & Dragons-inspired map the Kindred team created for a 2017 Coachella pop-up. The 90-minute experience has scroll menus, plant-based mezze, cocktails and zero interest in pretending restaurants need to behave normally.
1503 30th Street

Vinyl Junkies has good music-scene DNA. Founder Eric Howarth previously ran indie label Hi-Speed Soul, whose roster included acts like Nada Surf and Swervedriver, then teamed with Casbah owner Tim Mays after the pair had spent years putting on Vinyl Junkies record swaps.
They opened the South Park brick-and-mortar shop in 2017, and it remains a buy-sell-trade temple for people who understand that owning music on a physical object is irrational in exactly the right way. Go flip through the new arrivals. Leave holding something you had absolutely no intention of buying.
2235 Fern Street
Bad Madge is what happens when “vintage store” doesn’t quite explain the situation. Owner Tanya McAnear and her team fill the shop with furniture, clothing, barware, records, art, jewelry, collectibles, and various objects that seem like they may know things about their previous owners. The shop opened in 2011 and has made reuse and upcycling part of its identity ever since. Go in without looking for anything specific—specificity will only slow you down.
2205 Fern Street
Across the neighborhood’s vintage-and-vinyl universe sits Thread + Seed, a local boutique built around clothing, denim, gifts, and personal styling. Its South Park shop has an especially deep denim program—petite, tall, wide-leg, straight, flare—and the store also offers one-on-one styling built around color and body type. In other words, this is where you go after deciding the jeans currently on your body have betrayed you. South Park understands that sometimes personal renewal begins with pants.
2220 Fern Street
Seth Marko started The Book Catapult as a book blog in 2006. In 2017, he and his wife, Jennifer Powell, turned it into an actual bookstore in South Park, specializing loosely in fiction, local interest, and children’s books while maintaining the more important bookseller skill: putting something into your hands that you didn’t know you needed.
There are staff picks, author events, signed books, and the dangerous possibility of walking in for one title and emerging with four. Because no one ever died thinking, “I shoulda read less.”
3010-B Juniper Street
Johns Hopkins pain physician Dr. Anita Gupta, named a 2026 Health Pioneer finalist, on why women's pain is missed, and what modern care can do about it.
For too many women, pain becomes a long wait. Years of appointments. Symptoms explained away. A diagnosis that arrives, on average, seven years after the pain began. Dr. Anita Gupta has spent her career working to shorten that wait.
An anesthesiologist and pain medicine physician on the faculty of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Dr. Gupta was named a San Diego Magazine 2026 Health Pioneer finalist and honored by the California State Assembly as a 2026 Distinguished Woman in Medicine. Her clinical focus is the conditions women are most often told to live with: pelvic pain, endometriosis-related pain, fibromyalgia, migraine, and chronic pain that follows childbirth or surgery.
The numbers explain why the work matters. Nearly one in four adults lives with chronic pain, and women carry a heavier share of its most disabling forms. Endometriosis affects up to fifteen percent of women of reproductive age, and it can take years to diagnose. Women spend about 25 percent more of their lives in poor health than men, much of it in pain that was never fully worked up.
Modern pain medicine offers more than it used to. Image-guided injections and nerve blocks can pinpoint and quiet specific pain generators. Neuromodulation can calm overactive pain pathways when medications fall short. New non-opioid therapies, including the first new fibromyalgia treatment approved in more than fifteen years, give physicians options that did not exist a decade ago. And multidisciplinary care, pairing medical treatment with pelvic floor physical therapy, behavioral health, and nutrition, treats the whole picture rather than a single symptom.
In September 2026, Oxford University Press published Interventional Pain Medicine for Women’s Health, the textbook Dr. Gupta edited to give clinicians a rigorous, source-based guide to diagnosing and treating women’s pain. Her message to patients is straightforward: pain that persists deserves a name, a workup, and a plan. If you have been told your pain is normal, a second opinion is not a complaint. It is good medicine.

Dr. Gupta writes and speaks nationally on women’s pain, and advises the health innovators working to change it. San Diego, home to one of the country’s great life sciences communities, is exactly the place to expect better answers.

Dr. Jennifer Davis was a successful pediatrician in her mid-40s when she suddenly started feeling not like herself. Poor sleep, mood changes, fatigue, brain fog, and eventually hot flashes led her to realize she was in perimenopause. When she sought help, she found few local practices offering evidence-based, FDA-approved hormone therapy—and long waits to see those who did. Determined to help change that, she became certified by the Menopause Society and founded San Diego Menopause to provide women with the knowledgeable, compassionate care she had struggled to find.
At San Diego Menopause, Dr. Davis and nurse practitioner Taylor Stafford provide comprehensive, evidence-based care for perimenopause and menopause, including hormonal and non-hormonal treatments for symptoms including hot flashes, brain fog, sleep and mood changes, low libido and sexual health concerns. “Women deserve to be heard, believed, and taken seriously. I know firsthand how debilitating these symptoms can be,” Dr. Davis says. “Our mission is to empower women and give them their lives back.”
