The moral dilemma I’ve had with Asian food in San Diego is longstanding. I love the cuisine, but also wish they’d source healthier, less commodified food. Supannee in Point Loma at least partially solves that dilemma for me, pulling produce from their garden and offering grass-fed beef and Maple Leaf Farms Duck. And their red curry made my list of things you have to eat in San Diego last month—redolent of chiles, coconut milk, Thai basil, and peppers.

Our review next month is of Ponsaty’s, the Rancho Santa Fe French restaurant named in honor of Patrick Ponsaty, long one of the city’s top chefs. They did a fine job renovating the place, and Ponsaty’s menu is impeccably French. It wasn’t all gangbusters, but a few items were excellent as expected. This lamb, with flageolet beans, basil broth and Chino Farm veggies, was excellent, the basil broth the perfect foil for the lamb’s big flavor.

Put Frank’s Red Hot Sauce on anything, and chances are people won’t push it off the plate. This sandwich at the neo-deli near Petco Park does especially well. Fried dark meat chicken is slathered in Franks, topped with slaw, and put on a brioche bun with caper aioli. Leave the yoga pants at home.
