Sugar Cookies @ Prager Brothers

Know that white flour you have in your cupboard? Yeah, it’s dead. In order to make flour shelf-stable, America long ago took all the nutrients, flavor, and living goodness out of wheat. But Prager Brothers in Oceanside has brought back the art of milling good grains. Their flour will spoil faster than the dead stuff—that’s what good, real flour does. But they don’t have to worry. They sell it fast. Real fast. And once you get a taste of their breads, you’ll understand why. It absolutely pops with flavor. Especially these sugar cookies. Not sure I’ve had a real sugar cookie before this in my life, since all the ones prior to it were made with uninteresting, dead flour. Real food, a classic cookie, and oh, my, god.

Salmon Crudo @ Barbusa

For next month’s review, we take a look at Barbusa, the newish social dining experience from the Busalacchi family—one of the most established names in San Diego Italian food. For part of their concept, they’ve hired one of the former chefs from Hane, one of the city’s best sushi joints, to make a selection of crudo (think of it as Mediterranean sushi). The salmon is the best, with luscious cuts of raw salmon wrapped with thin slices of cucumber and sauced lightly with pesto and chile oil.

The Harpoon @ Chris’ Liquor

Can’t say I’ve ever written about a sandwich from a liquor store before, but this one is absolute gold. Chris’ is an Ocean Beach mainstay, with craft beers and kombucha and all things that people of taste, and hippies, love. They’ve also got a full deli with good meats and breads. The Harpoon would get approval of nine out of nine Jewish grandmothers—hot pastrami with provolone on a NYC-style onion roll.
