Nobu is known for chic Japanese dining, but they didn’t stop with sushi. The restaurant empire got into the hotel game in 2013 with its eponymous line of sleek, minimalist hotels in Las Vegas and Miami. Now they’ve launched luxury retreats inspired by Japanese inns, or ryokans, with reed floor matting (tatami), sliding paper doors (shoji), and other calm-inducing elements.
Opened in April in the former Casa Malibu motel space, Nobu Ryokan Malibu is the inaugural hotel in the collection, featuring 16 ocean-facing suites, teak soaking tubs, and traditional kimonos. The whole property is primed for serenity. Walls are sand-colored limestone, the entrance features a well-manicured garden, and the communal wooden deck overlooks Malibu’s Carbon Beach. And it’s just a two-minute walk to one of the area’s most famed restaurants—Nobu Malibu.
