USO San Diego received a $300,000 donation from the Dr. J Robert and Betty J. Beyster Family Foundation. In honor of Bob and Betty Beyster, USO San Diego unveiled the permanent Bob and Betty Beyster Patio at the USO Neil Ash Airport Center on Aug. 26. The funds will go to support development of the Norris Support Center for Military Families. The Center will provide the tools to help military members and families cope with stressful deployments.

Lucy Killea has been selected as Mrs. San Diego 2016 by the Rotary Club of San Diego (Club 33) She will be honored along with Leon Williams, Mr. San Diego 2016,at the September 15 luncheon to be held at Liberty Station. Killea has served on the San Diego City Council, in the California Assembly and in the State Senate. Her career in other government service includes U.S . military intelligence and the CIA. She is currently a member of the San Diego Downtown Breakfast Rotary Club.

On Aug. 26 and 27, Sharp HospiceCare held its 14th annual Sharp HospiceCare Benefit Dinner and Regatta. The event began on Friday evening with a pre-race dinner at Hotel del Coronado. Hosted by Sharp HospiceCare, Coronado Yacht Club and Cortez Racing Association, the $545,000 raised supports the Homes for Hospice program which offers a unique environment for patients with a life-limiting illness to meet their needs in a comfortable home setting. Tracy Lyon was the event chair and Dee Ammon was the Honorary Chair.
Higgs Fletcher & Mack contributed $5,000 to the San Diego Public Library Foundation. The Foundation provides resources and programs that benefit young learners and teens while also offering complimentary cultural, educational and literary events annually.

Danah Fayman, supporter and champion of the arts in San Diego, has pledged $50,000 to invest in the success of A Reason To Survive (ARTS) and transcenDANCE Youth Arts Project. The two organizations joined forces to become a single Creative Youth Development organization located in National City. “Unified under the name of ARTS, we will be a hub of artistic and personal exploration for youth,” said ARTS Founder and Chief Executive Officer Matt D’Arrigo. A matching campaign called UNITE and CELEBRATE 2016 has been launched to honor Ms. Fayman’s long-time support and help ensure the smooth coalescence of the two organizations.
The San Diego Downtown Breakfast Rotary Foundation is hosting its10th Annual Holes for Heroes Golf Tournament on Sept. 16 at Lomas Santa Fe Country Club. Net proceeds support San Diego military charities. “Holes for Heroes is 100 percent volunteer based, which allows for all proceeds to benefit local humanitarian and military charities,” said Larry Potter, President of the San Diego Downtown Breakfast Rotary. Among the charities benefiting are Freedom Dogs, Honor Flight and One More Wave Surf Corporation.

St. Paul’s LUV Gala “Oceans of LUV’ was held on Aug. 13 at the Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina. Joye Frye, Marcia Thaxton and Bathryn Bunch were the honorees. Proceeds of $260,000 will support St. Paul’s Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) located in Chula Vista and Downtown. Other programs at St. Paul’s include Memory Support, Assisted Living, Skilled Nursing, Respite Care and Independent Living.
KPBS San Diego was recognized with two national awards for philanthropic success in public media. Tom Karlo, General Manager, received the 2016 C. Scott Elliott Development Professional of the Year Award. This award was established in 1990 and given as part of the 2016 PBS Development Awards, which recognize member stations for outstanding corporate support, membership, philanthropy and special achievement efforts in local communities. The KPBS Producers Club was honored for its philanthropy. Both awards highlight the growth and success of KPBS in Karlo became general manager in 2009.
San Diego County Credit Union’s “Stuff the Bus” yielded 4,808 backpacks and 246,543 school supplies for students as headed back to school this year. SDCCU Stuff the Bus was held in partnership with the San Diego County Office of Education and iHeartMedia radio stations. An additional $23,622 was collected through in-branch fundraising and online collection to be used to purchase supplies for students. The event was launched in support of the Live Well San Diego Initiative.
