When Jaclyn Shepard isn’t hiking through national parks or nearby trails, she’s snapping away in her neighborhood of Ocean Beach. Typically she’s more comfortable behind the camera, but on this October day, the 27-year-old graphic designer stepped in front of the lens for a shot of herself draped in a Mexican blanket. “The feeling out was extremely eerie,” she says. “I was one of the only people on the beach for sunset.” Shepard had to contend with shifty lighting, gusty winds, and a slight drizzle—not to mention a tripod—to capture the moment. “But I envisioned the photo and wanted it to come to life.”
