The Alliance Healthcare Foundation has awarded the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine a $1 million Innovation Initiative Grant to support the work of Dr. Sara Browne. The grant will fund groundbreaking research in the use of wireless technologies in the management of personal and public health. Browne is collaborating with colleagues at UC San Diego’s Anti-Viral Research Center. “The purpose of our Innovation Initiative is to identify and reward a nonprofit organization that serves the most vulnerable in our community – including those under 250 percent of poverty – and that will make a substantial impact on the health care system by decreasing costs, improving quality and increasing capacity,” said Nancy Sasaki, executive director of Alliance Healthcare Foundation.
Angel’s Depot received a $100,000 contribution from the Walmart Foundation for the senior food program. Angel’s Depot delivers packages to seniors across the county the third week of each month to help seniors with food to eat until their next Social Security check arrives. Walmart’s donation will increase the number of packages delivered each month to more than 1,000. Walmart has donated $4.5 million over the past two years to organizations serving families throughout San Diego County.

Voices for Children hosted a Judge’s luncheon on Feb. 3 at the University Club with guest speakers Carolyn Caietti, Presiding Judge, San Diego Superior Court, Juvenile Division, and Supervisor Dave Roberts, County of San Diego, 34th District. Each spoke of the plight of foster children and of the vital role volunteer Court Appointed Special Advocates have in making foster children’s lives better in San Diego County. VFC is the only agency in San Diego County designated by the courts to provide CASAs to foster children.
The Kettering Foundation selected the Malin Burnham San Diego Center for Civic Engagement at The San Diego Foundation and a consortium of regional partners to join a learning exchange with the New Centers for Public Life. The Kettering Foundation’s New Centers for Public Life seeks to develop a fresh understanding of and activate the role of citizens as actors in democracy.

As part of LAZ Parking’s annual meeting held in San Diego, the company raised funds for the Challenged Athletes Foundation. On Feb. 4, 75 company employees ran a course through downtown San Diego accompanied by athletes from CAF. Scout Bassett, a CAF spokesperson and challenged athlete who lost her leg at an early age in China due to severe burns joined the runners. A $10,000 check was presented to CAF after the run.

University of San Diego received $6 million from the estate of Walter Zable and his wife Betty in support of Torero Athletics and to fund athletic scholarships. “We are forever grateful to the Zables for their generous support of USD’s athletics program,” said USD President Mary E. Lyons. In 2006, the University honored Walter, a past member of the Board of Trustees, by naming the field at Torero Stadium the “Walter J. Zable Field at Torero Stadium.” “Walter was a true inspiration to all who knew him. Because of his own experience as an outstanding collegiate athlete, Walter understood the opportunities collegiate sports can provide many young men and women who otherwise might not attend college,” said Ky Snyder, executive director of Torero Athletics.
The JCC Patron Party is scheduled for Mar 1 at Neiman Marcus in Fashion Valley. Proceeds benefit the programs and services at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center, Jacobs Family Campus. Joan and Irwin Jacobs are Honorary Chairpersons and Jerri-Ann and Gary Jacobs are Chairpersons.
The annual ArtWalk sponsored by Old California Restaurant Row in San Marcos begins the first Sunday of each month, March through October. Local artists will come together on Mar. 2 to showcase their works. In addition, the Sunday events include a Car Show featuring high energy race and sports cars, exotics, hot rods, classics and modified drag racers, as well as a Farmers Market.
