Tri-City Hospital Foundation’s annual Diamond Ball gala raised $500,000 in honor of the Foundation’s fiftieth anniversary. Bob and Sandee Carter were honored with the Tri-City Hospital Foundation Legacy Award, which recognizes extraordinary members of the community committed to improving the lives of others through their actions, accomplishments and generosity. Funds from the black tie affair will assist Tri-City Medical Center in acquiring a state-of-the-art GE 512 Slice CT imaging system, resulting in faster diagnoses and advanced treatment options for patients at the North County community hospital. The new imaging system will be available to patients utilizing the Emergency Department.
The National Latina Business Women’s Association-San Diego Chapter celebrated 10 years of empowering Latina Business Women in San Diego with the Women in Motion Awards Gala on Dec. 5 at The University Club. Those honored included Silvia Mah & Felena Hanson for Fastest Growing Business; Hispanic Chamber of E-Commerce as Outstanding Corporate Supporter; Adelia Carrillo as Business Member Volunteer, and Mary Salas, Incoming Mayor Chula Vista as Trailblazer of the Year.

Voices for Children’s Ultimate Man Cave event was held on Nov. 14 at the La Jolla Country Club. Board members Dick Pfister and Randy Finch served as Co-chairs of the event raising $57,000 which will provide more foster children with the advocacy of a Court Appointed Special Advocate, or CASA volunteer.
Classics 4 Kids received a $2,000 grant from Target Corporation for the “In Tune With Target” music education program. The grant will focus on providing access to in-school custom classical music curriculum and professional kid-friendly symphony concert experiences to students in low-income areas throughout San Diego County.
Higgs Fletcher & Mack law firm and its staff has donated $18,000 to United Way of San Diego County in honor of the firm’s 75 years. The contribution is $8,000 over the 2013 campaign and on top of Higgs’ ongoing “7,500-Hour Volunteer Challenge” to celebrate its 75th Anniversary.
The City of El Cajon was selected by the American Planning Association to receive two distinguished awards. The San Diego Chapter of the American Planning Association recognized El Cajon for its creative approaches identified in the Housing Element, selecting El Cajon as the winner in the “Comprehensive Plan for a small jurisdiction” category. Additionally, the California Chapter of the American Planning Association selected El Cajon as the winner of the “Award of Merit” category.
The San Diego Foundation awarded grants to 30 nonprofits focused on serving San Diego communities in the health and human services field. The $369,000 went to organizations for their work in areas of need such as abuse/crisis, hospice, homeless/mental health, developmentally disabled and senior healthcare and nutrition. “The health and human services grants are important because these areas of focus are often woefully underfunded,” said San Diego Foundation CEO Kathlyn Mead.

MUFG Union Bank and KPBS honored 19 inspirational individuals at the 17th Annual Local Heroes celebration at a ceremony and reception held at San Diego State University’s Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union on Nov. 15. The honorees were announced as part of the 2014 Local Heroes program, which recognizes and pays tribute to exemplary leaders who are making a difference and enriching the lives of others by improving their community, region and the world at larger.

The San Diego Building Owners & Managers Association conducted its 21st annual “Give From Your Heart” toy drive to benefit Promises2Kids. BOMA delivered decorated donation bins to business and office buildings through San Diego County where San Diegans were invited to drop off gifts until Dec. 15. At that time, the bins are collected and delivered to Promises2Kids sorting facility where the gifts are allocated to foster children within San Diego. This community-wide effort with corporate leaders volunteering hundreds of hours, brightens the holidays for underserved children.
