Never mind those renovations. Mingei International Museum is carrying on as usual, with off-site shows throughout the year while its Balboa Park location undergoes construction. This month, they’re hauling works out of their mid-century collection to the San Diego Central Library Art Gallery for Crafting Opportunity.
On exhibit through July 28, the spectacle spotlights post–World War II makers—Ellamarie Woolley, Jack Lenor Larsen, Arline Fisch, and Maria Martinez, to name a few—and their creations in the form of ceramics, fiber art, fashion, metalwork, and even furniture . . . made of beer cans? Correct. It’s just one example of how craftspeople like San Diego industrial designer Douglas Deeds, who brazed together these steel cans in 1962, exercised individuality in an era of mass production—or, shall we say, found their crafting opportunity.
