For nearly a century, the House of Pacific Relations International Cottages has been a cultural anchor in San Diego’s Balboa Park, offering a vibrant glimpse into the traditions, food, and heritage of dozens of countries. More than just a collection of historic cottages, HPR is a community of volunteers working to preserve and share global cultures through public events, educational programs, and old-fashioned hospitality.
Ghada Kadri, a longtime volunteer and current vice president of HPR, has dedicated herself to keeping that spirit alive. Whether advising youth organizations, coordinating events, or representing her Lebanese heritage, she’s all about connection. Ahead of the organization’s 90th anniversary this year, we caught up with Kadri to talk about her journey with HPR, the moments that have stuck with her, and why she believes volunteering is one of the most rewarding ways to give back.
What made you want to volunteer for the House of Pacific Relations?
I was at a point in my life where I wanted to get more involved, and this organization gave me purpose.
What do your volunteer duties entail?
I was Vice President 1 last year, and now I’m Vice President 2 for HPR. I also serve as advisor to the HPR Knights, co-chair of publicity, president of the House of Lebanon, and I’m on the events committee for both HPR and the House of Lebanon. It’s a lot, but I love it.
Can you describe your favorite or most memorable experience while volunteering?
One day, I was in the park answering questions about the different cultures we represent, and a little girl ran up to me so excited to learn about HPR. The spark in her eyes was unforgettable. Our youth are our future, and seeing that kind of interest is exactly what we want to encourage.
What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced?
Keeping politics out of the community. We strive to be a role model for the world by staying united, and that’s not always easy.
Any advice for someone thinking about volunteering in their community?
Get involved, get connected, and be open to meeting amazing new people. It changed my life, and it will change yours. Volunteering is about paying it forward and spreading kindness, and honestly, it’s one of the most rewarding things you can do.
