Monarch School welcomed a positive and fun-loving crowd—including the Swingin’ Friar—during its record-breaking fundraiser, Raise Up for Monarch. Guests were treated to music, bubbly, and a self-guided tour of the campus. Monarch students were able to showcase their various talents and projects from inside the classroom to the art studio to the kids’ kitchen (rainbow skewers!). Petco Park catered the cocktail hour, then student performers kicked off the program portion in the gym with a choreographed dance. One enthusiastic student and a bright alumna spoke about their individual journeys before a raise-the-paddle garnered an unprecedented $1.9 million. The money supports Monarch services and learning opportunities, allowing students experiencing homelessness to find a supportive, enriching, and happy home in Monarch.
Home Start’s 47th annual Blue Ribbon Gala brought in more than $120,000 to help prevent child abuse in San Diego County. Nearly 300 people attended the outer space-themed event at the Hilton San Diego Resort and Spa April 6 and were treated to a three-course meal, auctions, and live entertainment. The gala is held each April in recognition of National Child Abuse Prevention Month.
The Carlsbad Charitable Foundation, a San Diego Foundation affiliate, recognized four local nonprofits that bring together youths and seniors with grants totaling $73,000. The recipients were Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad, which will use its $10,000 to pair elementary and middle school students with seniors in its Rancho Carlsbad Garden Mentoring Program; the San Diego Dance Theater to fund an Intergenerational Dance Program; New Village Arts for its efforts to document intergenerational conversations via theater productions; and Kids for Peace for its Grandfriends Kindness Project, which creates connections through service.
