San Diego Humane Society held its 30th annual Fur Ball Gala on Aug. 13 at the San Diego Campus for Animal Care on Gaines Street. Event underwriters included Petco and the Petco Foundation, Purina, California Coast Credit Union, Canna-Pet, California Bank & Trust, First Republic Bank, MFM Enterprises and Sharp Health Plan. All proceeds support the mission of SDHS which is to provide vital services to animals and people by sheltering and adopting animals, providing positive reinforcement training classes, and presenting education programs for youth and adults.
The Living Coast Discovery Center on San Diego Bay in Chula Vista, raised $96,000 at its seventh annual Farm to Bay event on Aug. 6. The funds will be used to support coastal wildlife, education and sustainability programs at the Living Coast. Event sponsors included Marine Group Boat Works as the Presenting Sponsor, City of Chula Vista-Environmental Services, SDG&E, Sprouts Farmers Market – Chula Vista and Eastlake, Mission Federal Credit Union, BAE Systems and Wells Fargo.

St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center hosted its 39th Haute with Heart Fashion Show on Aug. 13. The event was held at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront and raised $165,000. SMSC helps people with developmental disabilities, their families and communities, discover, explore and nurture potential.

The San Diego Human Dignity Foundation and the San Diego LGBT Community Center hosted the “Reunion on the Bay” fundraiser on Aug. 6 at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina. Judy Tenuta, comedienne and actress, was the special guest at the event. Proceeds totaling $30,000 will go the SDLGBT Community Center for the Senior Resource program and to the SDHDF’s Aging with Dignity initiative.

The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego is presenting its 40th annual Monte Carlo, “Bollywood” on Sept. 10 at its La Jolla location. Lisette and Mick Farrell are the event chairs. “The funds raised will help us do what we do best all year long – deliver high quality, well executed exhibitions and public programming to our community,” said Kathryn Kanjo, incoming David C. Copley director/CEO.
The San Diego Foundation distributed grants totaling $297,642 for seven programs that nurture the career path of future scientists and develop unique and innovative discoveries in the science, technology and environmental fields. The Blasker Science and Technology grants, and the Blasker Environment grants are made possible by the Blasker-Rose-Miah Endowment Fund at The San Diego Foundation. Among those receiving grants are San Diego State University and California State University San Marcos, each receiving $75,000; Scripps Institution of Oceanography, $49,179 and a second grant in the amount of $38,115; San Diego Mesa College, $31,348; and BIOCOM Institute, $19,000.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego held their first “Stuff Our Bus” campaign presented by the University of Phoenix and Sprint on Aug. 12. The bus filled with kids, staff and board members traveled to KPMG, University of Phoenix, GEICO and Sofie Canyon Hills Apartments to collect backpacks and school supplies. Mission Federal Credit Union helped by supporting a shopping trip to Kohl’s Poway on Aug. 13. Forty kids were given $200 each to shop for clothes, thanks to funds raised by BGCGSD board members.
ArtWalk@ Liberty Station held its 11th annual event on Auf. 13-14. Artists sold $700,000 in paintings, sculptures and glass work, fine jewelry and photography to the 20,000 attendees.
The official charity partner of ArtWalk San Diego is ArtReach, which brings art educational programs and visual art lessons inton K-6 schools that lack resources for art education.
