Guests at City Ballet of San Diego’s 25th Anniversary June Fundraiser got a glimpse “Inside the World of Ballet” and  of what exactly goes on behind the scenes of one of the top-tier dance company’s performances. Ballet Mistress Tanya Rogers and City Ballet dancers showed off their skills on the barre, and Wardrobe Mistress Jannifer Mah demonstrated the intricate art of making tutus. The afternoon event also featured a Swan Lake hair and makeup tutorial.

The fundraiser June 24 at the Rancho Santa Fe estate of Judy and Vince Bartolotta raised nearly $50,000 for the nonprofit company’s performances, along with education and outreach programs such as free ballet instruction for disadvantaged children and youth at risk and its intensive three-week summer program. City Ballet’s 26th anniversary season begins Nov. 2 with Tchaikovsky Spectacular.

Help stuff this bus with school supplies for the county’s more than 22,000 homeless students

San Diego County Credit Union is once again collecting school supplies to donate to the over 22,000 local students facing homelessness. Want to help? Drop off school supplies at a SDCCU branch location, participating Walmart stores, or look for the two Stuff the Bus school buses on tour with iHeartMedia San Diego radio stations Star 94.1, Channel 93.3, JAM’N 95.7 and KOGO AM 600 through July 31. A full list of drop-off sites and tour info is available at sdccu.com/stuffthebus.

“We know that our families feel supported when they find out that their children will have all of the supplies they need to start the school year ready to learn just like all of their peers. The generosity of the community and the deep partnership with SDCCU makes this possible and we are so grateful for every backpack we are able to fill,” said Michelle Lustig, San Diego County Office of Education Director, Foster Youth Services Coordinating Program & Homeless Education Services.

The San Diego Foundation is giving out more than $2.6 million in scholarships to 876 local students. According to the foundation, 66 percent of the recipients are the first in their families to attend college, and 76 percent are considered low-income students. Since 1997, the foundation has awarded over $30 million to thousands of students.

“As the cost of higher education rises, a significant deterrent to pursuing and finishing a degree is affordability,” said Connie Matsui, Interim Chief Executive Officer at The San Diego Foundation. “The San Diego Foundation Community Scholarship Program helps remove this barrier for San Diego youth and their families, enabling hundreds of students to achieve their educational goals every year.”
