AimLoan.com was the Title Sponsor of the Father Joe’s Villages 15th Annual 5K on Thanksgiving Day. The event raised $425,000 to support the work with individuals to help them overcome homelessness. Housing, rental assistance, healthcare, food, clothing, education, job training, are some of the services provided at Father Joe’s. Sponsors of the event included Chevron, MRC Smart Technology Solutions, San Diego Fluid System Technologies, AMN Healthcare and A.O.Reed & Co.
The Salk Institute for Biological Studies received a $25 million grant to be used to continue exploring projects aimed at understanding role chronic inflammation plays in driving human disease. The grant from The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust extends the $42 million Helmsley gift made to Salk in 2013. That gift established the Helmsley Center for Genomic Medicine, which enables Salk’s leading scientists to delve into the genetic underpinnings of some of humankind’s most devastating afflictions.
Salvation Army Red Kettle Kick Off
Corbin Bernsen, actor and star of USA Network’s hit series L.A. Law, was the guest of honor at The Salvation Army Red Kettle Kick Off event held on Nov. 17 at the Westgate Hotel who was the Title Sponsor along with San Diego Magazine. The event raised $45,000 which will support the SA County corps programs. Auction items included tickets to the Broadway production of Hamilton, dinner for 4 at Addison, Neiman Marcus “Lady’s Day” lunch and Tournament of Roses Parade and Rose Bowl Game.

The Association of Fundraising Professionals San Diego Chapter, held its 44th annual celebration of National Philanthropy Day on Nov. 16 at Copley Symphony Hall at the Jacobs Music Center. This year’s them was “A Symphony of Philanthropy” and included a performance by the San Diego Symphony. Those honored were T. Denny Sanford, Philanthropist of the Year; Laura Farmer Sherman, Amy Parrott, Dylan Dabasinskas, John Seiber, and Linh Luong.
The Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation, an affiliate of The San Diego Foundation, awarded $70,200 at the 27th Annual Thanksgiving Luncheon at The Rancho Bernardo Inn. This year grantmaking was focused on programs that enhance civic engagement in the community of Rancho Bernardo. Those receiving grants included Highland Ranch Educational Foundation, Youth Philharmonic Orchestra, ElderHelp of San Diego, and Rancho Bernardo Senior Services Center.
Rancho Santa Fe residents Molly and Mike Gregoire have provided a dollar-for-dollar match to the RSFF Community Impact Fund in honor of the Foundation’s 35th Anniversary. This matches funds for up to $35,000 in donations through Dec. 31. RSFF has granted $1.6 million through this fund. Some of the non-profits who have received grants are Armed Services YMCA + Thyme Together Food Truck, providing life-changing meals + socializations for North County senior citizens.
The Walter J. and Betty C. Zable Foundation granted $160,000 in continued support of the Make Every Wish Come True initiative for Make-A-Wish San Diego. The initiative was created to increase community awareness and support to reach 100% of local children that are eligible for a wish. The David C. Copley Foundation contributed $25,000 and The Parker Foundation granted $15,000.
The 18th Annual Crystal Ball Gala hosted by Casa de Amparo
The 18th Annual Crystal Ball Gala hosted by Casa de Amparo was held on Nov. 5 at the Del Mar Country Club. The $300,000 raised benefit Casa de Amparo’s programs that treat and prevent child abuse and neglect throughout San Diego County. Fluid Components International was designated as honorary chair for donating the proceeds from their annual golf tournament for the past five years. They are also involved with Come Home to Casa, an in-kind drive, and fulfilling Casa Kids holiday wish lists.
