Evelyn and Ernest Rady were honored at the 107th Charity Ball which was held on February 27 at the Hotel del Coronado. The volunteer-organized Charity Ball is the longest running Gala held in San Diego. This year the $450,000 raised will support the Crisis Stabilization Unit at Rady Children’s Hospital providing comprehensive medical, mental and behavioral health services for children and adolescents in San Diego. This is the first year Charity Ball has focused attention on mental health cause.

The San Diego Center for Children is recognizing Jim Avery and Susie Sides as the recipients of its 2016 PATH Award. The Award recognizes supporters and partners of the Center who have made an impact on the organization. The presentation will be held at the Center’s 129th Anniversary Celebration on June 2 at the U. S. Grant Hotel. “Jim and Susie have made it their personal mission to increase awareness about the San Diego Center for Children since they first became involved in 2011. Jim and Susie have expanded recognition and support of the Center,” said Moises Baron, Ph.D., President and CEO of the San Diego Center for Children.

On Feb. 28 the San Diego Professionals Against Cancer presented $5,000 checks to the Emilio Nares Foundation and to the Jewish Family Service of San Diego. The donations will be used to provide transportation to San Diego families to and from cancer treatment appointments as well as provide support groups and programs. The flagship event of SDPAC is the San Diego Festival of Beer which is being held on Sept. 23 at the Broadway Pier.
Wells Fargo presented a $75,000 grant to Workshops for Warriors, a school assisting veterans who are transitioning into civilian life through advanced manufacturing training, certification and career coaching. “Workshops for Warriors’ veterans are living proof that when you get proper training and support, a transition into civilian life can be successful,” said Brian Lee, North San Diego Area Bank President. “At Wells Fargo we believe we can only be successful if the communities in which we do business also succeed. We are proud to support Workshops for Warriors and all of their efforts to help veterans gain a better quality of life.”
Seany Foundation’s Teen Winter Weekend at YMCA Camp Raintreen Ranch in Julian was held on Feb. 26-28 with 100 people in attendance. The camp is a leadership, educational, and professional development weekend for kids who are going through or have been through cancer.
Seany partnered with University of San Diego’s Center for Community Awareness and Social Action student leadership team to develop the program that motivated the kids to think about life after high school and beyond the cancer stigma. A $15,000 grant from San Diego Professionals Against Cancer and a $5,000 grant from Wells Fargo Foundation helped fund the camp.
The Social Equity Collaborative Fund, a project of Social Equity Funders, has issued its first round of grants totaling $320,000 to nonprofit collaborative efforts that support civic engagement, at-risk youth, workplace rights, and connecting families to available public benefits. Those receiving grants were $75,000 to Engage San Diego, $120,000 to San Diego Youth Development Office and $125,000 to partners for Progress. The SECF was established by a three-year $1,050,000 grant from Satterberg Foundation. This pooled fund and funder collaboration are facilitated by San Diego Grantmakers.
Chelsea Street has been selected for the San Diego Chapter Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Man & Woman of the Year campaign, a 10 week fundraising competition to raise money for blood cancer research. Street, the youngest San Diegan at 23, was diagnosed with acute lymphomatic leukemia. She has been cancer free since the age of 3 and is now fighting for a world without cancer. [email protected].
