Jewish Family Service of San Diego (JFS) received a $100,000 grant from the S. Mark Taper Foundation for its Hand Up Food Pantry and Foodmobile program. Hand Up Food Pantry provides nutritious meals to 2,000-plus San Diegans, totaling about 300,000 meals per year. The FoodMobile program delivers hot, kosher meals to homebound seniors and young adults with disabilities. “Our commitment to enhancing the quality of people’s lives in the San Diego community is strongly aligned with the goals of the S. Mark Taper Foundation,” says JFS CEO Michael Hopkins. “We are grateful for their generous support and we look forward to using these grant funds to help the struggling families and individuals in need.”
Mission Fed got involved with the American Heart Association San Diego Division’s Go Red for Women campaign through January and February. Through media partners and members and staff at its 31 branches, Mission Fed was able to raise $30,000 to help fight the number one health threat to women, heart disease.
The San Diego History Center’s 2019 “Makers of San Diego History” event raised a record-breaking $109,000 for the nonprofit. More than 300 community leaders turned out to support the nonprofit and to recognize San Diegans who are “making history in their own time.” The honorees were California Senate President pro Tempore Toni Atkins and former California Senator Christine Kehoe.
Just in Time for Foster Youth (JIT) raised about $800,000 at its 6th Annual Walk the Talk Celebration at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine. The funds will support JIT’s programs and services for San Diego’s transition age foster youth. More than 750 young people ages 18-26 will benefit, with the goal of self-sufficiency and a greater well-being.
The Longhairs, an online men’s grooming brand specializing in Hair Ties For Guys (seen on Shark Tank, with Mark Cuban investing), held a charity hair cutting event at the waterfront. Over 2,800 people donated their locks for a record-breaking 339 pounds of hair. The Longhairs broke the world record for the most hair donated to charity in 24 hours.
