Jewish Family Service of San Diego’s Heart and Soul Gala brought in a record $1.5 million to support the nonprofit’s efforts to help local people in crisis. More than 600 guests attended the elegant event at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine on April 6.
“The support received at this year’s Heart and Soul Gala will help fund life-changing services for children, families, and older adults across our community,” said JFS CEO Michael Hopkins.

The Hyatt Regency La Jolla at The Aventine was decked out in shades of pink as more than 350 breast cancer survivors, supporters, community leaders, and others showed their support for Susan G. Komen San Diego at its More Than Pink Dinner. The evening event on April 11, moderated by City Councilwoman and breast cancer survivor, Marti Emerald, raised more than $200,000 to support cancer patients and research.
“Pink is more than a color. It represents the impact that each person is making in the fight against the most frequently diagnosed cancer worldwide,” said Shaina Gross, president and CEO, Komen San Diego.
In honor of Mexican holiday Día del Niño, Cross Border Xpress is asking travelers to bring a new toy to donate to children in Tijuana. In exchange, passengers will receive a free southbound ticket. Donations for the agency’s “One Toy, One Smile” initiative will be accepted through April 28.
Escondido Brewing Company has donated its $5,000 winnings from the Brewdown Beer Competition to Wounded Warrior Homes. More than 20 local beermakers faced off in the competition April 11 and each had previously chosen a charity to support should they win. Escondido Brewing Company’s prize money will go toward Wounded Warrior Homes’ plans to provide transitional housing for veterans with traumatic brain injuries.
