A Night to Remember Prom, created by community volunteers Rob and Cheryl Shields, received a True Inspiration Award from Chick-fil-A Foundation. The award recognizes organizations and grants dollars to further work fostering leadership and entrepreneurial spirit in children. The grant program aims to nurture young leaders and honor the legacy of Chick-fil-A’s late founder S. Truett Cathy. A Night to Remember is a free prom in San Diego honoring students with special needs.
Home of Guiding Hands is presenting the 6th Annual Randy Jones Run/Walk on Feb. 6. The fundraising goal is to raise $40,000 to benefit people with intellectual and developmental disabilities throughout San Diego County. The event will take place at De Anza Cove in Mission Bay Park. The event’s namesake, San Diego Padres Hall of Famer Randy Jones, was recently named HGK Community Partner of the Year. Event sponsors include Aguirre & Associates, California Bank & Trust, Ledcor Construction and San Diego County Credit Union.
The AT&T Aspire Mentoring Academy has provided 1 million hours of mentoring for students at risk of dropping out of high school. The company’s mentoring milestone was reached 1 year ahead of its goal. AT&T employees are connected to students who will benefit most from mentoring working in collaboration with organizations including Junior Achievement and Boys and Girls Clubs.

Jewish Family Service of San Diego celebrated its 250,000 ride of On the Go, which provides seniors of all faiths and backgrounds with easy, accessible and affordable transportation. The milestone was commemorated with a celebration on Jan. 20 at the College Avenue Center. Rider Anna Ritter and volunteer driver Howard Kugler were greeted by many who use On the Go for their transportation needs. “I knew the sense of relief and joy that simple transportation could mean to a senior. I experienced it first hand with my mother-in-law, who was dependent on a senior mini-bus,” said Kugler.
St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center was selected to receive a $5,000 grant from the Wells Fargo Foundation to help sustain the Work Activity Program, a community-based individual employment, group job sites, and/or participation in social enterprise ventures.
St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center Tea by the Sea 2016 was held on Jan. 23 at the Marine Room and the Wells Fargo Foundation received acknowledgement for their grant.
The Institute for Evidence-Based Change received a $700,000 one-year grant to continue data assistance for Linked Learning schools across California. “We appreciate the support of the Irvine Foundation in selecting us to help educators grapple with, and understand, what data and other evidence can tell them about the impact of Linked Learning on student progress and outcomes,” said Brad Phillips, IEBC President/CEO.

Las Patronas held its annual grantfunding luncheon on Jan. 20 at The Marine Room. The funds are raised through a yearlong effort with the support of the San Diego community. The major beneficiaries included Alpha Project for the Homeless, Arc of San Diego, Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego, Old Globe Theatre, The Preuss School – UCSD and San Diego Zoo Global each of which received an average of $40,000. The 70th Anniversary Jewel Ball is set for Aug. 6, 2016 at La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club.
Voices for Children Annual Judges’ Luncheon is being held on Feb. 8 at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront. The Honorable Carolyn Caietti, Presiding Judge, San Diego Superior Court, Juvenile Division and Alaysia, a former foster youth, are the featured speakers. A panel discussion, “Foster Children’s Mental Health & The Role of the CASA Volunteer” will be moderated by VFC President/CEO Sharon Lawrence.
American Heart Association is kicking off Go Red for Women by lighting Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center on Feb. 4. The Center is located at UC San Diego Health – La Jolla.
