Eighth annual ROMP gala

The eighth annual ROMP gala and Hoehn Motors Mercedes-Benz Raffle raised $800,000 to support services for families with critically ill or injured children being treated at a San Diego County hospital. ROMP: Aloha! was held on September 30 at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar. Ronald McDonald House Charities provides services including lodging, meals, and emotional support to families with a critically ill or injured child in a local hospital. Hoehn Motors, Carlsbad donated a 2018 Mercedes-Benz C300 Cabriolet or $50,000 cash. Other contributors to the proceeds included Susan and Scott Salka, A-1 Self Storage, The Bob Baker Foundation, and CHASE Bank.

Bank of America announced $330,000 in economic mobility grants to be distributed to 26 nonprofits working on community revitalization efforts across the San Diego region. Among the nonprofits receiving grants is Community HousingWorks, which will use the funding to continue building affordable apartment communities in San Diego and providing programs to support resident success while enhancing local economic growth and development. Other organizations receiving grants include: A Reason To Survive, ElderHelp of San Diego, and Downtown San Diego Partnership Foundation.

Eighth annual DEI Forte for Children Foundation charity gala

The eighth annual DEI Forte for Children Foundation “The Rhythm of Your Life” Charity Gala was held on August 26 at the Park Hyatt Aviara in Carlsbad. The foundation distributed $550,000 to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad, Oceanside, San Marcos, and Vista. Other grants were to Moonlight Cultural Foundation, Solutions for Change, and Casa de Amparo. Funds distributed will be used to support a variety of programs within each organization, focusing a portion of the grants on music education and therapy. The Issa Family Foundation was co-sponsor and Diamond Sponsors included Datron, Meiloon, Nutek, and Tonly & Inkel.

Salk Women & Science Design and Discovery Fashion Showcase

The Salk Women & Science Design and Discovery Fashion Showcase was held on October 4 at the Salk Institute. The event was a collaboration of Salk’s Women & Science and San Diego Mesa College’s Fashon Design programs, intended to raise funds for biological research. Proceeds will benefit the Salk Women & Science Special Awards Initiative.

Everyday California hosted a beach cleanup on September 17, bringing local companies together. Employees of San Diego-based companies including Blenders Eyewear, Pura Vida, Social Syndicate, and Crowe PR, scoured Ocean Beach before gathering for lunch and raffles. Raffle ticket and food and drinks proceeds raised $2,500 for the Wingman Foundation.

Rest Haven Children’s Health Fund awarded $210,150 to 18 nonprofit agencies through its 2017 grant funding cycle. The fund supports health-related services for underserved children in San Diego and Imperial Counties. The grant recipients include Community Resource Center, Emilio Nares Foundation, Home Start, Neighborhood House Association, Promises2Kids, and San Ysidro Health Center.

Eighth annual Miracle Babies gala

The Escondido Charitable Foundation, an affiliate of The San Diego Foundation, awarded $231,016 in funding at its 11th Annual Grants Celebration on September 28. Those receiving funding include: Robots, Coding & Digital Interactivity, STEM in the Classroom with Conway Elementary School and Transitional Age Youth Program with Voices for Children. Through 11 years of grantmaking, ECF has addressed a wide range of community issues including health and human services, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics education.

The eighth annual Miracle Babies gala, “Celestial Serenade,” was held on September 23 at Rancho Valencia. Roger and Tamara Joseph chaired the gala and Clinton Walters was the designer for the outdoor décor as well as the indoor pre- and post-reception area. The event raised $340,000, which will go towards uniting families with their sick newborns through financial assistance and supportive services. Event sponsors included Tri-City Hospital, Regents Bank, Mirandon Family Foundation of Hope, Katherine Cosmetics, and Oakwood Escrow. “The United States has much worse rates of infant mortality, preterm birth, and low birth weight than any other industrialized county,” said Marjan Daneshmand, co-founder of Miracle Babies.
