The Whaley House in Old Town San Diego was ranked number one haunted house in the United States by the Travel Channel. Tours are offered Sunday-Tuesday from 10am to 5pm, closed Wednesday, and open Thursday-Saturday 10am to 9:30pm.

Scream Zone at the Del Mar Fairgrounds
San Diego County’s largest Halloween haunt experience features a House of Horror, a creepy KarnEvil, a Haunted Hayride, and the chance to play in a Paintball Apocalypse. The Scream Zone is open Oct. 2-4, 8-11, 15-18, and Oct. 21-Nov. 1 from 7pm-midnight on Friday and Saturday; 7-11pm on all other nights.

RISE of the Jack O’Lanterns
More the 5,000 jack o’lanterns hand carved by professional artists and sculptors will be illuminated at the San Diego Safari Park along a 1/3 mile scenic walking trail. This is an annual event occurring in New York, Los Angeles, and San Diego, drawing fans from across the country. Experience the spooky illumination October 2-25 on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

Haunted Aquarium: Shipwrecked!
La Jolla’s Birch Aquarium is offering an up-close and spooky experience with a sea of glowing creatures on October 24 and 25. With the tunes of Billy Lee and the Swamp Critters, it’s a treat for the whole family. Learn about unique habitats, walk through a “whale-fall,” and create slime in a “deep-sea” slime lab.

Haunted Tales of Our Seafaring Past
Climb aboard the Maritime Museum of San Diego’s Star of India to experience lantern-led tours through the historic ship, while hearing ghostly stories of the past from costumed docents. These chilling nights will be hosted October 24 and 31, with three storytelling times: 6:00pm, 7:00pm and 8:00pm.

Hauntfest on Main
Held on October 23, the fourth annual Hauntfest in downtown El Cajon is a free event featuring a pumpkin patch, costume contest, live entertainment, and Kidz Zone with outdoor movies, carnival rides, and candy trails.

The Haunted Trail
Experience this bone-chilling, mile-long outdoor trail with creepy clowns and inspiration from New Orleans’ Bourbon Street, while you navigate your way through vampires, aliens, and ghouls of all sorts. Visit the trail September 25 through November 1, with thrills starting at 7pm Thursday-Sunday.

Spooktacular 5k, 10k, 15k Run-Walk
Sport your best costume at Hospitality Point Park on October 25 for a 5k, 10k, or 15k Run-Walk along the scenic waters of San Diego. Every finisher gets a medal and T-shirt once they reach the finish line. Also, a portion of the race’s proceeds benefit Patrick Henry High School.

Howl-O-Ween 5K Mutt Run/Walk
Bring your pups for a 5k run/walk on October 24 to support dogs in need of a helping “paw.” There will be a doggie costume contest, T-shirts, raffle prizes, and entertaining booths. All of the proceeds go to the Compassion 4 Paws Foundation, supporting senior rescue dogs, and dogs that are ill, injured, or suffering.

This October 18 Halloween Fun Run for the whole family takes you through Morley Field and the Florida Canyon on the edge of Balboa Park. There will be prizes for best costume and best time by different categories. This event is a fundraiser for Roosevelt Middle School’s PTSA with proceeds benefitting after-school clubs and enrichment programs.

Monster Bash Block Party
Haunted souls can run wild at the Monster Bash on Halloween night where eight blocks of the Gaslamp Quarter and East Village neighborhoods will be transformed into the wildest Halloween event of the year. The extravaganza will feature more than 20 DJs, food, and drink specials, and five main stages where all of your Halloween nightmares will come alive. The costume contest even has a $5,000 cash prize.

On Friday, October 30, celebrate Halloween at Hotel Del Coronado during an adults-only “Hallo-wine & Spirits Party.” From 7-9pm partygoers can enjoy grown-up trick or treating, wine tasting, and delicious food from The Del’s kitchen. Nightmare on Normal Street
At Hillcrest’s famous Halloween Street party, expect live entertainment, a costume contest, and two bars.
