The action this week is at Sanford Consortium’s Duane Roth auditorium. First up, the Innovation Alliance town hall meeting. Who dat? The Sanford Consortium and Takeda have struck a five year $10 million deal. Talks, led by Larry Goldstein (UC San Diego) and Michael Martin (Takeda), will focus on how this new couple will collaborate and work to advance each organization’s scientific missions.

Dart NeuroScience – TDLC Seminar Series with Fred H. Gage, aka “Rusty”: Okay. So this guy is poised to win the next Nobel Prize for his research and in my opinion, is part genius. He discovered that the adult brain can form new cells! So in college, all those brain cells…? Jokes aside, Rusty Gage is one of the most fascinating minds in town and a great speaker. His topics of research are so relevant to our daily lives, our own futures and the lives and futures of our loved ones. He really knows how to break things down for my fellow non-scientists. Definitely sneak out of the office for this one! August 26, 3-4 p.m., Duane J. Roth Auditorium.

Symphony at Salk: Noooooooooooo! Looks like only wait list available for the SOLD OUT 20th annual Symphony at Salk. Music under the stars framed by our favorite stunning travertine. You better pull some strings and get yourself a seat at the classiest event of the year. Last year got to meet Al Gore and schmooze with the headliner, Glee’s very own Mathew Morrison. My recommendation, head to Mustangs and Burrows for some late night shenanigans after the show. August 29.

You call that a sign? Now that’s a sign!!! No need to get snarky because there is another café de Malarkey down the street. Think big folks. This is AWESOME SAUCE! My dear friend Charles Kaufman of Bread & Cie once spoke to my class, stressing that being surrounded by successful businesses is a good thing. Another wise friend quoted “A rising tide lifts all boats.” Exactly! Malarkey in the neighborhood is dope! He’s going to bring much more awareness to what’s going down on the Mesa. Throw in James’s place now in action at LJP, the Lodge at Torrey Pines, Mustang and Burrows at Estancia, Chef Giuseppe’s Caroline’s by the Sea. We got it goin’ on!

Meet Janet Hubka of Ilus Art. You might have caught a glimpse of her artwork hanging in San Diego’s new Airport Terminal 2, which celebrates all things local. The untold story is how she and her husband have spent the past year traveling around San Diego schools, sharing their artwork, and delivering a 50 minute presentation to our K-12 students. Now here is a couple that doesn’t just talk the talk. They are out there, putting the “Arts ” into STEAM. Have you ever tried to keep a kid’s attention for more than 10 minutes? Janet shares, “the best part is when we see the aha moment when the kids recognize that the art is the cells within their own bodies.” Attending one of their recent presentations in Chula Vista, I myself had a few epiphanies: Wait… that is what Parkinson’s disease looks like through a microscope? And the images are breathtaking. Did I mention that a portion of the money raised from the sale of her artwork goes straight back to the lab that generated the science behind it? Check out her art displayed in the lobby of the Sanford Consortium till the end of the month and stay tuned for an upcoming family event featuring the scientists themselves. I look forward to the writer who covers this amazing woman’s efforts in depth. A short blog post does not do her story justice.
