The New Children’s Museum has commissioned one-of-a-kind playscape by internationally recognized fiber artist Toshiko MacAdam using funds from the National Endowment for the Arts. The $25,000 NEA grant, one of only six given to museums in California, will go toward a mostly handmade installation on the upper level, tentatively set to open in June.
“From the first time my son played in MacAdam’s ‘Woods of Net’ pavilion at the Hakone Open Air Museum in Japan, I dreamed of collaborating with her,” said Tomoko Kuta, Deputy Museum Director. “We are thrilled to be working with Toshiko, someone who creates beautiful, immersive sculptures and who understands the needs of children.”

Chelsea Clinton joined in on a Just in Time for Foster Youth mentoring session
Former First Daughter Chelsea Clinton paid a visit to Just in Time for Foster Youth last month to speak with teens transitioning out of the foster care system. She sat in on JIT’s Coach Approach mentoring program and discussed with members goals, experiences, and child welfare issues.
JIT, the Clinton Foundation, the Health and Human Services Agency, and The San Diego Foundation have joined forces for a three-year project called Strong Families, Thriving Communities that aims to improve the quality of life for local kids.

Sempra Energy donated over $45,000 to help the San Diego Rescue Mission feed hungry San Diegans
Fewer San Diegans will go hungry thanks to a $45,150 gift from Sempra Energy to the San Diego Rescue Mission. More than $15,000 of that was contributed by individual Sempra employees, who were then matched 2:1 by The Sempra Energy Foundation. The funds will go toward the San Diego Rescue Mission’s Partners for Hunger Relief program, which supports food recovery efforts throughout San Diego, serving various agencies and people.

Nason’s Beer Hall will host the 11th annual St. Baldrick’s Shave-a-Thon. Show up between noon and 3 p.m. and shave your head if you dare, or just pull out your wallet to help kids with cancer. General admission is $10 and a $15 donation with also get you a St. Baldrick’s T-shirt and a raffle ticket.

Options For All, which helps adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities live life to the fullest, will hold its 10th annual Taste of Our Community from 6 to 9 p.m. at BRICK in Liberty Station. Sample some of San Diego’s best bites, cocktails, wine, and craft beer while supporting a great cause. Tickets purchased prior to the day of the event are $100, and day-of tickets are $115.
Tuesday, March 19:
Voices for Children and Warwick’s will launch an author luncheon series with “An Afternoon with Gretchen Rubin.” The 11:45 a.m. event at the UCSD Faculty Club will include lunch, a discussion with the bestselling author, and a signing of her new book Outer Order Inner Calm. Individual tickets are $150, tables start at $1,500 and a portion of the proceeds will benefit Voices for Children’s Court Appointed Special Advocate program.
