The San Diego Foundation will award $2.7 million in scholarships to 900 students pursuing higher education during the 2017–2018 school year. The scholarships are made possible through the Community Scholarship Program at the foundation. “Investing in our students is one of the strongest ways to support our region and future generation of leaders,” said Kathlyn Mead, President and CEO of The San Diego Foundation. “The Community Scholarship Program makes a difference in the lives of many families and young adults who otherwise would not have the opportunity to continue their academic development.”

Fur Ball

The San Diego Humane Society will honor Sandra and Ed Burr at its 31st Annual Fur Ball on September 9. Major event sponsors include Petco Foundation, PETCO, Purina, EDCO, VCA Animal Hospitals, and Scott & Susie Tietjen. Dinner and wine selections will be provided by Jeffrey Strauss and Pamplemousse Grille. Proceeds benefit SDHS and SPCA.

The 22nd Symphony at Salk, a concert under the stars, is being presented by Debra Turner on August 26 at the Salk Institute. Special Guest David Foster will perform along with San Diego Symphony. Sponsors include Joan and Irwin Jacobs, Simner Foundation, Audrey Geisel/Dr. Seuss Fund, The San Diego Foundation, and Darlene Shiley.

Support The Enlisted Project and United Through Reading inaugural golf tournament

Support The Enlisted Project (STEP) and United Through Reading partnered on the inaugural golf tournament held on June 23 at Salt Creek Golf Course. The tournament raised $64,000 to support military families. STEP and UTR’s Chief Executive Officers, Tony Teravainen and Sally Ann Zoll, said they were pleased with the support displayed by San Diegans making this dual-charity golf tournament a success. Sponsors included PM Tec, Umpqua Bank, Bank of America/Merrill Lynch, and MGO CPA.

The 15th Annual Sharp HospiceCare benefit dinner and regatta is being held August 25–26. Proceeds benefit Sharp HospiceCare’s Homes for Hospice Program, which offers innovative living environments for people with life-limiting illnesses. Honorary Commodore Sponsors are Virginia Napierskie, Sodexo, and Lantern Crest Senior Living. Steven and Dr. Marilyn Norton are Honorary Chairs.

HospiceCare regatta

The 6th Annual U.S. Sand Sculpting Challenge and Dimensional Art Exposition is being held Labor Day weekend, September 1–4. Sculptors from countries from all over the world will take on the challenge competing against the best Master Sculptors in the USA. $60,000 in prize money will be awarded.

On September 8, The Vision of Children Foundation is hosting a concert featuring Gary Puckett and the Union Gap Band. The event is being held at Fairbanks Ranch Country Club and will benefit The Vision of Children Foundation – to cure childhood blindness.

The Globe Guilder’s Annual 27th Fashion Show in partnership with Neiman Marcus, “Art of Fashion: Fall 2017,” is being held on August 30 at the Omni La Costa Resort. The runway show will feature the Fall 2017 collections of several celebrated designers. The Globe Guilders volunteer auxiliary supports The Old Globe’s artistic and arts engagement programs.

Ronald McDonald House San Diego – North House

Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego re-opened its original house on July 13, naming it the Ronald McDonald House San Diego – North House. Since February 2017, $380,000 was raised along with $150,000 in-kind services to pay for renovation of the original San Diego RMDH. The Walter J. and Betty C. Zable Foundation offered a $50,000 grant for the renovation. Additional gifts were provided by Letitia Hunte Swortwood, Price Philanthropies, and WebMD Foundation.
