United Through Reading held its 9th Annual Storybook Ball on Veteran’s Day, November 11 in Coronado raising $292,000 for military families. The funds will allow UtR to continue bringing bedtime stories home to children, connecting them with their parents serving from a distance. BAE Systems, Inc. was the Title Sponsors. Other sponsors included USAA Bank, Reader’s Digest Foundation, Readerlink, Insperity, Navy Federal Credit Union and The San Diego Padres.
YMCA Overnight Camps’ California Dreamin’ Beach Party was on November 4 at the McKinney Oceanfront Center. The event raised $45,000 to provide life -changing outdoor experiences and vital support for kids to attend camp. Major sponsors were EDCO, California American Water, Sysco and FruitCraft.
Grossmont Healthcare
The Grossmont Healthcare District held a check presentation ceremony with Maureen Hartin, CEO of Volunteer Medicine San Diego celebrating GHD’s support of VIM including a $150,000 grant awarded over the current fiscal year. The Grand will assist with paying for diagnostic test lab tests and fees as well as medical supplies for uninsured residents at the VIM El Cajon medical clinic.
On November 20 Mama’s Kitchen opened “Pie Central” to distribute pies to San Diegans who purchased their Thanksgiving pie in Mama’s Pie in the Sky fundraiser. For 13 years Sycuan Casino has joined other bakers to raise essential funds toward organization’s nutrition services. Sales began on October 9 and continued through November 19. Proceeds from pie sales go directly to funding Mama’s Kitchen meals, which help ensure on one living with HIV, cancer or other critical illnesses will go hungry in the San Diego Community. Additional support was provided by Sycuan, Wells Fargo and Jerome’s Furniture.
Padres Pedal the Cause
Padres Pedal the Cause co-founder, and team leader of Bill’s Angels, Amy Koman, participated in a spin class at this year’s cycling fundraiser to end cancer. $1.8 million was raised to date with fundraising continuing through December 20. All of the funds go to cancer research at Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health, Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute, the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, and Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego.
Life Perspectives, an organization that provides healing resources for men and women who are experiencing loss through miscarriage or abortion, held its Side by Side 5K Walk on October 28 at De Anza Cove. The $74,000 raised goes toward the expansion of the organization’s healing and training resources throughout San Diego County and across the country.
University of California San Diego alumnus and Qualcomm co-founder Franklin Antonio is donating $30 million to the university in support of a new building for engineering research and education. The building will be named the Franklin Antonio Hall. The building is being designed to facilitate cross-discipline collaborations that are critical for solving the toughest health, energy, autonomy and security challenges facing society.
The Virginia Napierskie Family Grossmont Hospital Foundation celebrated its 32nd Annual Gala on November 4 at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina. “Stayin’ Alive DISCO Night,” raised $460,000 to support Sharp Grossmont Hospital’s David and Donna Long Center for Cancer Treatment. The Virginia Napierskie Family was the Title Sponsor and the Presenting Sponsors were the Grossmont Healthcare District and Sharp Grossmont Hospital Medical Staff. The event was chaired by Sandy Jackman and Mona Pear.
UPLIFT San Diego
UPLIFT San Diego (Urban People Living in Faith and Trust), is celebrating the 30th Anniversary of service to San Diego’s Inner-city. The 10th annual UPLIFTing Citizens Tribute is being held on November 28 at the USD Hahn Center Forum. The 2017 Tribute theme “Share the Spirit” is honoring Dr. Ken Blanchard, Author of The One Minute Manager and Legendary Consultant on Servant Leadership. The evening will also include a VIP Reception with 10 Year Reunion of Past Honorees.
