Pamela Wygod and the WebMD Health Foundation were recognized with the Help and Hope Award by CancerCare, a leading national organization providing free support services to anyone affected by cancer. The award was presented to Wygod by dedicated cancer advocate Katie Couric at CancerCare’s 70th Anniversary Celebration Gala which was held at Cipriani in New York City on Apr. 23. Pamela is a founding officer and director of the Foundation. Her philanthropic work focuses on health, education and child welfare. She has been a devoted member of CancerCare’s Board of Trustees since 2006. She was also named the 2013 Outstanding Philanthropist by the Association of Fundraising Professionals, San Diego Chapter (AFPSD).
Conrad Prebys has recommitted major support for KPBS and the MASTERPIECE Trust with a third gift of $500,000 bringing his total donation to $1.5 million since 2012. The MASTERPIECE Trust is a fundraising initiative in collaboration with PBS stations across the nation. Half of the Prebys gift will be granted to KPBS and will support local programming in San Diego. The other half will go directly to the Trust for investment in the series’ future. “Due to Mr. Prebys’ generosity, KPBS has been able to create more programming devoted to local news, arts and the San Diego culture,” said KPBS General Manager Tom Karlo.

The Petco Foundation hosted its sixth annual Hope Gala on May 3 at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront. Hilary Swank, award-winning actress and animal lover, was honored for her work in animal rescue and commitment to animal advocacy. Ms. Swank was presented the Petco Foundation’s Hope Award, which celebrates the spirit of hope through a life dedicated to promoting the human-animal bond. The event was sponsored by Natural Balance in partnership with Petco and raised $600,000 to help improve the lives of pets.

Voices for Children’s Wine Women and Shoes was held on May 3 at the Cielo Clubhouse in Rancho Santa Fe. The lead sponsors were Party City, Cox Communications and Stacy Jacobs. Other sponsors included California Bank & Trust, VUKA and KPBS. The event raised $194,000 which will provide more foster children in San Diego County with Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteers working on their behalf-in the courtroom, classroom, and community.

Lori Raya, president of Vons, was presented the Eugene “Mitch” Mitchell Community Hero Award in recognition of Vons’ support during the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank 2014 Gala which was held on May 3 at the Food Bank’s warehouse facility in Miramar. The award recognized Vons’ contributions to the Food Bank through food donations, monetary support and volunteerism. The Viejas Foodtasia: Burlap and Silver, raised $258,000 to support hunger-relief programs including the Food 4 Kids Backpack Program which provides backpacks full of child-friendly food to children living in poverty who receive free school meals during the week, but face hunger of the weekend.
In recognition of Skin Cancer Awareness Month, Art of Skin MD’s 4th Annual “SolSearch” fundraiser party on May 1st raised $15,000 to benefit The Skin Cancer Foundation. Free skin cancer screenings were provided by Art of Skin MD the weekend prior to the party. “Engaging the community about the importance of skin cancer detection is essential and SolSearch has become our signature event for raising awareness about the dangers of skin cancer, and the importance of prevention and early detection,” said Melanie Palm, M.D. founder of Art of Skin MD.

The Preuss School UCSD’s annual benefit The Preuss Promise: Lighting the Way raised $347,800 to support Preuss longer school day and school year, professional development for teachers, Saturday Enrichment Academy time, and college counseling. UC San Diego Chancellor Pradeep Khosla opened the evening’s program by speaking about the importance of broadening the path to higher education. Supporters for the event included The Preuss Family Foundation, Darcy and Bob Bingham, The Weil Family Foundation, Sempra/SDG&E, Sanford Burnham, UC San Diego Alumni Association and UC San Diego Academic Affairs.
