The 24th Annual Guardians of San Diego’s Golf & Tennis Tournament was held on July 27 at Del Mar Country Club. The tournament, “Take a Swing for Seniors”, presented by The William Gumpert Foundation raised $150,000 which will support the provision of charitable care for residents of Seacrest Village Retirement Communities. The highlight of the day was when Constantino Salios hit a hole in one on the 3rd hole and won the Audi A3 sponsored by Hoehn Audi. “I’ve been playing golf for over 40 years and this is my first hole-in-one ever,” said Salios.
San Diego Humane Society received a $60,000 grant from the Ellen Browning Scripps Foundation to benefit homeless animals in San Diego County. $20,000 will go to the Escondido Campus for equipment and supplies to create a kitten nursery, $20,000 will support the foster program, and $20,000 will be used for outsourcing specialized veterinary services and medical supplies for Project Wildlife, a program of SDHS. “Animals are near and dear to all of us at the Foundation, so we’re proud to be able to contribute to their care through the great work of SDHS,” said Doug Dawson, Executive Director of the Ellen Browning Scripps Foundation.

La Valencia Hotel hosted the “Six Degrees of Michael Mina” fundraiser to benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego on July 22. The star chefs of the evening were Jeffrey Strauss, James Montejano, Jason Halverson, Michael Mina, Tina Luu and Wade Hageman. “La Valencia has been part of the San Diego community for nine decades and a key part of that involvement is giving back,” says hotel Managing Director, Mark Dibella. “We were proud to launch our “Haute Pink” series of fundraisers for local charities.”

The San Diego Society of Professional Journalists recognized KPBS journalists at the annual San Diego SPJ awards banquet held at the Bali Hai. The ceremony honored journalists for their work in television, radio, integrated-media and photography. The first ever Gloria Penner Award for Political Affairs Reporting was presented to Claire Trageser.
Celebrating Life Benefit Dinner and Regatta is being held Aug. 28 & 29. The 13th Annual Sharp HospiceCare dinner will be held at the Hotel del Coronado, and the day of racing will be on San Diego Bay. Elmcroft Senior Living is the Honorary Commodor Sponsor.
