Darlene Marcos Shiley is gifting the MASTERPIECE Trust with a $3 million grant. The gift, on behalf of her late husband Donald and herself, is the fourth and largest gift to the MASTERPIECE Trust, which also benefits KPBS. “My husband and I always took great satisfaction in supporting KPBS and its programs such as MASTERPIECE,” said Shiley. The station plans to use their share of Mrs. Shiley’s gift to support programming devoted to local news, arts, science, and culture.
Tony Award-Winner Laura Benanti will be featured in a special concert performance at the 2014 Globe Gala which is being held on July 26 at the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage at Old Globe Theatre. The concert will be followed by dinner on The Old Globe Copley Plaza. Proceeds from the evening will support the education and outreach programs of The Old Globe. The celebration began with the Underwriters party and concert with Steve Martin and The Steep Canyon Rangers featuring Edie Brickell on July 1 and Humphrey’s Shelter Island.

Thirty high school students were awarded Cox Scholars scholarships totaling $75,000 from the Cox Cares Foundation to help them with a college education. Scholarship winners were chosen based on their commitment to community service, scholastic achievement and continuing their educational goals while overcoming adversity.

The Center for Community Solutions held a reception on June 6 at San Diego’s Broadway Pier and Pavilion for the exhibition, “Notes to Our Sons and Daughters: My Sister’s Voice.” The multimedia exhibition featured 40 evocative portraits of women from diverse generations and cultures including Inocente Izucar and Sydney Seau. The net proceeds of $65,000 goes directly to supporting the CCS programs and services, a 24-hour crisis hotline, counseling, shelter, advocacy, prevention and education – for individuals affected by domestic violence, sexual assault and elder abuse.
North County Health Services was awarded $75,000 as part of a program for expanding access to improve healthcare. The Blue Shield Expanding Access through Team Care award is funded by the Blue Shield of California Foundation. It began July and will run through June 30, 2015. The purpose of the award is to improve strategies that expand the implementation and effectiveness of care teams.
Briana Cardoza, NCHS senior director of program planning and grants, said funding will allow NCHS to adopt team-based care models of care that will ultimately expand access to primary care in our community.
Jackson Design & Remodeling is giving back to the community in 25 charitable ways in celebration of its 25th year in business. This is a collaborative effort of all JDR staff members participating and working together as a family. They came up with a list of local services and organizations that meant something special to them and have completed over a dozen acts already. Some of their projects include a blood drive at the San Diego Blood Bank; a beach clean-up to benefit the local chapter of the Surfrider Foundation; The Princess Project San Diego donating prom dresses; planting a garden for the children of Giggles and Smiles and a donation to the Encinitas Little League.

United Way of San Diego County celebrated the longest day of the year on June 21, San Diego business leaders gathered at the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank to pack books and write notes to kids. “Many economically disadvantaged families have little or no access to reading material when school is out, and our goal is to help remedy that by providing enjoyable, age-appropriate options,” said United Way President and CEO Kevin Crawford. United Way was able to buy and collect more than 14,000 books. Volunteers included individuals from the board of directors, Dr. Pepper/Snapple Group, GEICO who was the book drive sponsor, Target and the Women’s Leadership Council.
Neiman Marcus San Diego is giving first look access to its Last Call sale which begins on July 19 as part of “The Heart of Neiman Marcus”, the national campaign supporting arts organizations. The purchase of a ticket allows guests early entrance to the store and an additional 10% off the already reduced price on three items. The New Children’s Museum will receive a portion of the funds raised through ticket sales.
