16th annual Telethon for the Animals
The 16th annual Telethon for the Animals which was held on Mar. 23 raised $285,000 for San Diego Humane Society and SPCA. KFMB Channel 8 broadcast the program which featured adoptable pets and information about SDHS programs. The funds raised will benefit the animals in the San Diego community and support the vital community programs of SDHS. Sponsors of the Telethon included Petco and the Petco Foundation, Hill’s Pet Nutrition, California Coast Credit Union, Phil’s BBG, Underground Elephant and VCA Animal Hospitals. “We’re constantly in awe of how San Diego comes together to support its animals,” said Dr. Gary Weitzman, president and CEO of the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA.
The Miss Senior San Diego Pageant
The Miss Senior San Diego Pageant is being held on Apr. 26 at the Paradise Village Retirement Senior Theatre in National City. Women over the age of 60 are eligible to participate. The Age of Elegance celebrates women from the “Greatest Generation.” “We want to keep these women visible and let the country know what they have contributed to their families and this country,” said Elvia Harris, 1st Runner-Up Miss Senior San Diego.
Academy Award-Winning actress Marlee Matlin will headline Center For Community Solutions’ Tea & Tonic event being held on Apr. 26 at the Grand Del Mar. Marlee continues to break barriers in her career, not just as an actress in the deaf community, but as a survivor of child and intimate partner abuse. She will share her personal story of breaking the cycles of violence and how we all can be part of the solution. “We look forward to this year’s revamped ‘Tea & Tonic’ event revitalizing CCS’ efforts to thank all the supporting organizations and individuals that play starring roles in helping us deliver critically important social services,” says Verna Griffin-Tabor, executive director of CCS.
Just in Time for Foster Youth
Just in Time for Foster Youth will celebrate its 10th Anniversary “Help from the Heart” gala on Apr. 6 at the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines. The Gala raises funds to support programs that assist with housing, college resources and building community networks. For a decade, the organization has been an extended family for young people leaving the foster care system with little or no family support. Honoree chairs are Sleep Train, Jessie Knight and Joye Blount. The event includes a car raffle with a grand prize of a 36 month/10,000 miles per year lease on a 201 FIAT 500 donated by FIAT Kearney Mesa.
Gap intelligence hosted “Drives for Rides” golf tournament on Mar. 15 at the Riverwalk Golf Club to benefit Emilio Nares Foundation. The golf competition raised $10,000 for low-income or underprivileged families with children who are battling childhood leukemia and other forms of juvenile cancer. Gary Peterson, founder and CEO of gap intelligence said, “The organization makes a profound impact on our community, helps save the lives of children in dire need and is led by two of the most passionate people I have ever met.”
The San Diego Regional Fire Foundation is partnering with the Emma Zen Foundation to raise funds for pet masks for each fire station in the region. The masks are specifically designed to fit a dog or cat and can be attached to the same oxygen bottle used for resuscitating people overcome by smoke. San Diego Gas & Electric is the first major corporate donor with a contribution of $2,500. Joan Jones, Executive Director of the San Diego Regional Fire Foundation said a kit of three pet masks can be purchased for $75. The goal is to purchase pet masks for the 250 fire stations in San Diego County.
