Mayor Bob Filner presented San Diego Air & Space Museum with a proclamation in recognition of 50 years of outstanding service to the citizens of San Diego. The spring Fun’ Raiser, International Explorers Wanted, raised $75,000 for the Museum’s youth education programs. Sponsors included George and Helene Gould, Arthur Wok, the Hamerslag Family, Clay Lacy Aviation and North Island Credit Union.

Susan Taylor, Scripps Healthcare is emceeing Scripps Third Annual Show to celebrate cancer survivors. Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue will headline the event being held at Humphrey’s Concerts By The Bay on June 17. The evening is being sponsored by United Healthcare and will benefit Scripps Health.

San Diego Police Foundation is presenting the 13th annual fundraiser Friends of the Badge Luncheon on June 26 at the Valley View Casino Center. The focus is on “Keeping Kids Safe Online” with SafetyNet: Smart Cyber Choices.  Proceeds from the event help insure that programs critical to public safety receive funding that is not available through the city’s budget.

Susan and Bill Hoehn hosted a benefit for Classics for Kids Foundation at their home on May 31. Classics for Kids Foundation was co-founded in 1998 by Dr. Condoleezza Rice and Muir Quartet cellist Michael Reynolds in response to decline of music education programs in public schools. Rice attended the event to help raise funds to support new matching grants to the San Diego Youth Symphony.  $200,000 was raised for musical programs in San Diego. We are proud to be the Foundation’s partner in making music education accessible and affordable to all children in San Diego,” commented Dalouge Smith, President and CEO of San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory.

Andaz San Diego received a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence Award for 2013. The award is given to the top-performing 10 percent of businesses listed on TripAdvisor throughout the world. To qualify, businesses must maintain an overall rating of four or higher, out of a possible five, as reviewed by travelers on TripAdvisor.

In partnership with the NBCUniversal Foundation, NBC San Diego launched its annual grant program, 21st Century Solutions. The program will award three grants totaling $100,000 to local non-profit organizations in San Diego. One organization will receive $50,000 and two others will each receive $25,000. Grant submissions will be accepted from now through July 31. Non-profits are given the opportunity to compete for recognition of their innovative, community-based programs in the areas of Civic Engagement, Education, Environment, Jobs and Economic Empowerment, Media Arts and Technology.

La Jolla Festival of the Arts has announced the 27th Annual LIFA which is being held on June 22 and 23 at UC San Diego Warren Field. The Torrey Pines Kiwanis Club presents the festival to raise funds for programs which support adaptive sports and recreation programs for San Diegans with disabilities. Among the 30 programs are Sharp Memorial Rehabilitation Center, which has provided comprehensive rehabilitation services; Mission Bay Aquatic Center, which offers an accessible water sports program; Paws’itive Team Service Dogs, providing service dogs for persons with disabilities; and Cal-Diego Paralyzed Veterans Association, which improves the quality of life for veterans of the US Armed Forces.

The Committee of One Hundred held its annual Luncheon Meeting on May 31. Mayor Bob Filner presented the 2013 Gertrude Gilbert Award to Ranger Kim Duclo for his commitment to Balboa Park as a Ranger and a goodwill ambassador to park visitors. City Council President Todd Gloria presented the 2013 Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue Award to the San Diego Chamber of Commerce.  In September of 1909 a special Chamber of Commerce committee formed the Panama-California Exposition Company. San Diego was the smallest of any city to attempt holding an international exposition.

Roll Out The Barrel

Roll Out The Barrel, a benefit for Make-A-Wish San Diego will be held on July 13 at Humphrey’s Concerts By The Bay. Ashford University and Sycuan are sponsors of the event to raise funds to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.
