Senior Community Centers honored volunteers at its annual Volunteer Recognition event on Apr. 25 at the Gary and Mary West Senior Wellness Center in Downtown San Diego. Those recognized for their commitment of time and efforts to help seniors were: KPMG Accounting; Kirby Noonan Lance and Hoge, Longevity Award; National Charity League, San Diego Chapter, Philanthropy Award; Angela Coriale, AECOM, Individual Award; and The Hartford, Horizon Award. Paul Downey, president and CEO, Senior Community Centers said, “This year’s award recipients have proven themselves to be superstars. We thank and congratulate them for their dedicated service to our organization and the seniors we serve.”
Susan G. Komen for the Cure, San Diego is granting $1.4 million this year, the most money in its history. The grants will provide diagnostic mammograms and life-saving support screenings to 10,000 under and uninsured women in San Diego County. The grantees were announced at the Grants Award Ceremony held on Apr. 18 at AMN Healthcare.
The 5th Annual Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast is scheduled for May 24 at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront. The event brings together 1,000 San Diegans who support equality and justice. All proceeds benefit the San Diego LGBT Community Center. In 2012, The Center provided 50,000 direct service visits to community members and through its events, activities, and advocacy, touched the lives of thousands more. www.harveymilkbreakfast.org
The San Diego Council on Literacy will hold its Fourth Annual “Eat. Drink. Read. On May 22 at the McMillan Event Center in Liberty Station. Restaurants/chefs will present their dishes inspired by a book they love. The SDCOL supports the learning and the emergence into society of children and adults who can’t read and therefore do not progress in life and they don’t prosper.

Center for Community Solutions raised $150,000 at its 14th annual “Tea & Tonic” event on May 3 at the Grand Del Mar. Nordstrom was the title sponsor of this year’s event while TJX Companies served as the presenting sponsor. Premier sponsors included The California Endowment and HD Supply Facilities Maintenance. The funds raised are used for prevention and intervention programs throughout San Diego. CCS presented its Courage Award to Crystal Harris, an advocate for crime victims. They also recognized Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation as its Volunteer Organization of the Year for its ongoing generosity in supporting the agency.

Casa de Amparo raised $130,000 at its 17th Annual Meet the Chefs of Del Mar on Apr. 14 at the Hilton Del Mar. Chefs from fifteen of Del Mar’s restaurants prepared signature dishes with win pairings courtesy of Young’s Market. The funds raised support Casa’s programs and services for San Diego children, youth, and families affected by or at risk of child abuse and neglect.
Swing Fore the Kids Golf Tournament is being held today at Fairbanks Country Club. All proceeds benefit Rancho Family YMCA. The tournament in its 14th year, raises funds to keep programs and services offered by the Rancho Family YMCA affordable and also provide scholarships for children who are not able to afford it. The Major Sponsor is Thompson & Associates, and Supporting Sponsors include Antac Pest Control and Barney & Barney (Carmel Valley).

La Jolla Playhouse named Robert Brill the theatre’s inaugural Artist-in-Residence. This new, multi-month residency program is supported in part by a donation from Playhouse Director Emeritus Des McAnuff.
The San Diego Senior Pageant was held on Apr. 26. The winner was Michele McDougal. Her poise, talent and philosophy of life took her to the winner’s place. The first runner up was Vernetta of Miss Vernetta’s Dance Studio. They will advance to the Ms. Senior California Pageant to be held on Aug. 31 at the Rose Theater in Westminster, Ca. to compete for the title of Ms. Senior California.
