The University of California, San Diego announced that the UC San Diego Foundation has received a $6.05 Million bequest from the late Cubic Corporation founder Walter J. Zable and his wife, Betty Zable. The bequest has been allocated by the Foundation to support endowed faculty chairs in UC San Diego’s Rady School of Management and the Jacobs School of Engineering, to create an endowed scholarship and fellowship program for all students, and provide funds for the UC San Diego Shiley Eye Center. “Boosting our endowment, funding faculty chairs, supporting students and advancing health care are all outcomes of our strategic planning process that will help in UC San Diego’s mission to be a student-centered, research-focused, service-oriented public university,” said UC San Diego Chancellor Pradeep Khosla.

The United Way of San Diego County held its annual campaign kickoff on Sept. 17 at NTC Liberty Station. The James F. Mulvaney Community Leadership Award was presented to Author Hughes for his long-lasting, exceptional service to the San Diego community. In addition to serving on the board of directors for United Way of San Diego County, Hughes has served as a director for the Union Bank of California, San Diego Chamber of Commerce, the Mingei Internationa Museum, the San Diego Symphony and the American Cancer Society. The Volunteer of the Year Naish Award was given to Stephen Smurthwaite who has made a significant and sustained contribution to United Way. Smurthwaite’s daughter, Hollie accepted the award for her father.

The Glenner Memory Care Centers held the second “Glow Ball” golf tournament on Sept. 13 at Sail Ho Golf Course in Point Loma. The tournament raised $5,000 for Glenner’s caregiver support services and its three adult day programs throughout San Diego County.
Wheel to Survive, a six-hour indoor stationary cycling fundraiser to benefit The Clearity Foundation which raises money for ovarian cancer held a training ride on Sept. 21 at The Sporting Club San Diego. During September’s Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, spin instructors conducted a training in preparation for the Wheel to Survive, benefit which Is to take place on Oct. 27. Parents, families and advocates affected by ovarian cancer participated in the training ride to focus their hope on helping other patients.

Ron Fowler, executive chairman of the San Diego Padres ownership group, will be presented with the Guthrie Award at the Huntington’s Disease Society of America’s 13th annual Qualcomm Celebration of Hope Gala. The Gala is being held on Oct. 12 at the Omni San Diego. Fowler is being recognized for his 15 years of support. Funds raised will support HSDA’s mission to fund ongoing research and education, provide support services for those living with HD and ultimately find a cure.

The American Red Cross San Diego/Imperia Counties Chapter held its 11th Annual Real Heroes Breakfast on Sept. 27 aboard the USSMidway Museum. The event is a community celebration honoring local individuals and organizations who represent the mission of the Red Cross by creating safer, more prepared and stronger communities. “Each one of our Real Heroes embody the spirit of the Red Cross mission and we are proud to share their stories,” said Tony Young, CEO of the local Red Cross. “Their stories are those of courage, perseverance and emergency preparedness– true heroes that our community needs to know about and learn from.”
The Josie Pearl Memorial Scholarship is holding its inaugural Josie Pearl Memorial Scholarship Celebration on Oct. 5 to raise funds to benefit students in need of college assistance. The event is being held at the Sunroad Resort Marina. The Scholarship Fund was launched by her daughter Staci Ortiz-Davis, a Carmel Valley resident and local high school teacher. Ortiz-Davis won the title of Mrs. California International, 2014 in August. As California’s representative, she will champion her passion of education throughout the year, as well as expand the scholarship foundation she created last year. Her grandmother Josie Pearl died in 2011. She was a depression-era child who was forced to drop out of school. The Scholarship Fund was started to ensure students today have the opportunity to go to college.
