Over 125 volunteers helped deliver gifts to seniors as part of the ElderHelp Holiday Angels program. 350 seniors received a Poinsettia Plant from Lowe’s, a holiday card made by the Girl Scouts or Cathedral Catholic High School students and a $25 gift card for groceries, prescriptions and other necessities. In addition, seniors with pets received dog and cat food, toys, outfits and supplies from PAWS. ElderHelp raised $15,000 to support the program. Sempra Energy Foundation, Hill Compliance Advisors, AT&T Pioneers, Village Vino, Scripps Assists, Earthstream and Intuit were contributing sponsors.

The Magic of Miracles, the 106th Anniversary Charity Ball is being held on January 31 at the Hotel del Coronado. Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation is one of the sponsors of the Ball, the longest running event in San Diego. Proceeds from this year will help children of our region who battle brain and spine cancer receiving treatment in the Neuro-Oncology Program.

On Dec. 8 Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County hosted its 12th annual Big Night on Ice at downtown Horton Plaza’s ice rink. San Diego Chargers Jeromey Clary and Nick Hardwick were on hand to meet and greet 300 Bigs and their Littles for a night of ice skating. Jack in the Box provided guests with chocolate overload cakes and Frank Motors sponsored a toy giveaway.
The Women’s Leadership Council of United Way of San Diego County donated $104,000 to fund three local programs. “The Women’s Leaderhsip Council is about women sharing resources, networks and talents to make San Diego a better place,” said Chair Rebecca Smith. The programs funded are Bright Futures, Juma Ventures and Promotoras. Council members include women in the business, financial, legal and service industries, as well as education and healthcare. The Council raises awareness and funds to help solve community problems.
Drew Schlosberg received the Literacy Luminary Award from the San Diego Council on Literacy at the 22nd annual Chairman’s Circle event held on Dec. 10 at Fairbanks Ranch. Schlosberg was recognized as a resourceful and inspirational friend to the Council and was central to the U-T Race for Literacy benefiting the San Diego Council on Literacy. Drew said he is passionate about literacy because it is basic to participating in the world.
President & CEO of Jewish Community Foundation, Marjory Kaplan is celebrating her retirement after 20 years with the Foundation. “Reaching $1 billion in grants is one of the best retirement gifts ever,” said Kaplan. “Those thousands of grants form a beautiful mosaic of a generous community – caring and concerned about improving our world.”
“Pearls of Wisdom” Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Human Dignity Award Breakfast is being held on Jan. 16 at the Town & Country Resort, Atlas Ballroom. The 30th Annual event is presented by the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA. The Human Dignity Award is presented each year to a person who exemplifies Dr. King’s work and character.
Susan, Allison and Robert deRose – Sharp Rehab Center
Robert and Susan deRose made a $1 million leadership gift to name the Sharp Rehabilitation Center in honor of their daughter and former patient, Allison deRose. Philanthropy played a key role in transforming Sharp Rehabilitation Center into one of the most modern inpatient rehab centers in the western United States.
