SeaWorld San Diego Partners with The Salvation Army and Los Angeles Colleges to Inspire Marine Conservation Through Art

About the Event

SeaWorld San Diego and The Salvation Army are joining forces to spotlight the pressing crisis around ocean pollution through a collaborative mural project, designed in partnership with colleges across Southern California. Students from Otis College of Art and Design and Santa Monica College will design and construct large-scale, ocean-themed murals using end-of-life textiles provided by The Salvation Army. The finished murals will be unveiled on World Oceans Day, Sunday, June 8, and will be on display at Dolphin Stadium and the Wild Arctic exhibit for an extended period.

The murals honor the oceans while drawing attention to the urgent issue of pollution. Every year, the world generates a staggering 92 million tons of textile waste. With 60% of new clothing made from synthetic fibers—essentially plastic—these materials often contribute to microplastic pollution in the oceans or pile up in landfills as discarded garments. Created entirely from end-of-life textiles donated to The Salvation Army Family Stores, the pieces reflect a deep commitment to sustainability and creative reuse. Thrift stores directly support The Salvation Army’s Adult Rehabilitation Centers (ARCs)—places where men and women are given a new chance at life. In partnership with SeaWorld, this installation is more than art — it’s a powerful symbol of transformation.
