Trail of the Month: Los Peñasquitos Canyon

Where

Park in the lot off Black Mountain Road, just north of its intersection with Mercy Road near I-15. Follow the wide dirt trail into the canyon and then go as far as you’d like—it’s 12 miles out and back, and there’s a small side path to a waterfall just after the third mile marker.

Why We Love It

This dirt path makes for pretty easy trail running with no steep climbs. Trees provide shade most of the way, and you’ll get views of grassy meadows and open space. You may even see a deer. But don’t leave valuables in your car, because criminals are known to target the parking lot.

Where to Refuel Afterwards

Nutmeg Bakery and Café (12640 Sabre Springs Parkway) is open for brunch until 2:30 p.m. and serves local and seasonal options.
