Ways to Get Moving This Month

Polar bear plunge, stretching, diet, and more

Event

Take the Plunge

We dare you to take the Polar Bear Plunge at La Jolla Shores

Work off that New Year’s Eve hangover with a midmorning cold-water dip at the Shores. The annual tradition marks the year’s first social event for the hosting organization, La Jolla Cove Swim Club. Water temps average in the high 50s, but you don’t have to actually swim. You can dip a toe and then warm up at the chili potluck following the plunge. January 1, 10 a.m.

free advice

“Next time you reach for a piece of cake or candy, stop, get a 16-ounce glass of water, and take a five-minute walk. It’s amazing what a glass of water and a short walk can do for your will power.”

—Dr. Mike Moreno, author of The 17-Day Diet Breakthrough Edition (January)

New Service

Get Loose

Stretching is a good way to ward off aches and pains, but most people only manage to fit in a few half-hearted toe touches. Enter Stretch U. Structured like a gym, including an open room outfitted with a row of massage tables, Stretch U gives you access to physical therapists who work your stiff muscles and joints in as little as 20 minutes. Hop on the table and leave with improved flexibility, circulation, and range of motion. Stretch U opened its first San Diego location in Kearny Mesa in May, and is opening a second location in Del Mar in January. Monthly packages start at $59. stretchu.com —Hilary Achauer
