$316 million facility opens at airport
The new rental car center that has been under construction alongside Pacific Highway for the past few years officially opened Wednesday, January 20. We wrote about the airport’s struggle to find a restaurant tenant in the inaugural edition of Hatch, our new magazine about big ideas and innovation born in San Diego.
Spanning 2 million square feet, the massive facility can house 19 different companies and more than 5,000 vehicles. Consolidating all of the car rental options under one roof not only makes things easier for San Diego’s visitors, it also drastically reduces congestion on Harbor Drive. Now you won’t have to sit in traffic to catch a flight or while on the way to a dinner reservation at Coasterra.
The San Diego County Regional Airport Authority, which spent $316 million on the project, also replaced the entire fleet of busses owned by the car rental companies (about 80 vehicles) with 16 new shuttles that run on alternative fuels.
There are large-scale art installations throughout the center, but the 7,900-square-foot space for a restaurant overlooking the runway still hasn’t found a tenant.
