San Diego is about to get sandier. This Labor Day weekend, the U.S. Sand Sculpting Challenge returns to Broadway Pier, where 300 tons of sand will be brought in for the four-day competition. Master sand sculptors from the beaches of Italy, Ireland, and beyond will challenge the best in the country, and competitors have until Saturday evening to finish before awards are doled out on Sunday.
But it’s not just about sand. The event will also feature live entertainment, food trucks, and a wine and beer garden. Plus, aspiring young sculptors can learn how to build their own sand castles at the Kids Zone sandbox. And though the sculptures stay at the beach, there will be more than 1,000 works of art—including jewelry, metalwork, and wood carvings—available for purchase. We’ll dig right in!
